18 Romantic Comedies That Actually Aged Well

We recently asked members of the BuzzFeed Community to share their favorite rom-coms that have aged well over the years, and here's what they said:

1. Clueless (1995)

"Its lead character, while ditzy, is well-meaning, finds empowerment through helping others, and actually becomes a better person through the film. Cher is self-reliant, empowered and deep down does care about those around her. She spends the whole movie trying to help her friends. It also features Dionne, a very independent woman who speaks her mind and whose boyfriend treats her well even when they disagree."

2. Roman Holiday (1953)

"It’s still an empowering and beautiful story that features a strong, independent, and responsible female lead and presents a well-crafted and adorable romantic story. I watch it every year and it just makes me gush even though I’m not a romantic person AT ALL. Although it comes from an era of heavy sexism and discrimination, the themes and messages of Roman Holiday prove differently and can still be relatable today."

3. Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (2008)

"I'm a really feminist person and I always try and search for un-problematic rom-coms and this one was amazing!! The plot was really good and it actually had queer representation, plus the soundtrack is amazing and the shots of New York are absolutely beautiful!!"

4. About Last Night (2014)

I feel like ensemble rom-coms don't usually work out that well, but this one really does! The dialogue is hilarious, and it compares men and women without using harmful stereotypes.

5. 13 Going on 30 (2004)

"I love how they depict the 'in love with your best friend' type of romance, and that it also shows how people can change for worse over time without appreciating what they have right in front of them."

7. Wimbledon (2004)

9. Bridget Jones's Diary (2001)

This movie was a perfect rom-com when it came out, and remains one to this day. Bridget is unapologetically herself in all aspects of her life (socially, professionally, romantically) and finds happiness just the way she is.

10. My Best Friend's Wedding (1997)

"Obviously Julianne does some problematic things, but that's the entire point of the movie! Unlike most rom-coms, it actually portrays them as problematic, and when she realizes that she's been a bad person she lives through the consequences accordingly."

This movie is FUNNY and actually shows a love triangle without depicting either of the two women as broad stereotypes.

12. 500 Days of Summer (2009)

"A man idealizes a woman and fails to listen to what she repeatedly says she wants, and in the end she dumps him. It's also funny!"

13. Imagine Me and You (2005)

This movie relies on some well-worn rom-com clichés, but Piper Perabo and Lena Headey (yes, Queen Cersei!!) are so cute together that it makes it worth it.

14. Two for the Road (1967)

20th Century Fox

"This is a timeless classic about two unique people who state what they do and don't want out of their relationships, forgoing all that, living through marital struggles, and still coming out committed. Love and relationships are different for everyone, this movie shows a lot about the 'after' in 'happily ever after.'"

15. Love and Basketball (2000)

40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks

This movie is more of a dramedy than straight-up rom-com, but it is such a good exploration of how hard it is to navigate relationships, expectations, and your own dreams. Monica (Sanaa Lathan) should be every girl's role model.

16. Easy A (2010)

"It has a great message, great cast, and it's soo funny!"

Yes, this is a Disney movie. But you are lying to yourself if you don't think everything that happens between Giselle and Robert fits the bill for a rom-com.
