25 Ways Working at a Summer Camp Prepares you for the Real World

When someone mentions the words "Camp Counselor," the images that often come into mind are that of a silly teenager looking for a little extra money. But for those of us who have been there, you know the truth

    1. You’ll never complain about living in a crappy dorm or apartment after living in one of these for two months

    2. If you can get a bunch of ten year olds to clean a bathroom without any complaints, you can motivate anyone to do anything

    3. There's no better way to gain confidence with public speaking then making a fool out of yourself singing crazy camp songs

    4. If you don’t have something you need, you learn how to improvise. Fast.

    5. No one operates on limited sleep like a camp counselor

    6. Lack of privacy ain’t no thang to you

    7. You will clean messes some could only imagine in their wildest dreams

    8. You do all this without any real formal recognition

    9. You learn the true art of humility whilst being surrounded by campers who adore you

    10. And become an expert at helping kids who are missing home

    11. Or being bullied

    12. Or dealing with stuff you could never even imagine

    13. But you do it with a smile on your face

    14. Even though sometimes you look completely INSANE

    15. But you learn to embrace your quirks and strangeness

    16. And sometimes even teach kids to embrace theirs

    17. Despite all this craziness, parents trust you with their kids

    18. Even when they’re doing things like this

    19. Or this

    20. Or this

    21. Even more than that, you learn to trust yourself

    22. Not that you're ever on your own, you always have an army of fellow staff to back you

    23. Though you would never brag about any of these things

    24. It's just all in a days work.

    25. And you don’t need any praise or encouragement to know that what you do matters.
