"Hello Barbie" Is Either The Coolest Or Creepiest Doll Ever

Mattel has unveiled the world's first interactive Barbie doll. Equipped with voice recognition technology, she listens, talks back, and remembers your likes and dislikes.

Using WiFi and speech recognition technology, "Hello Barbie" can carry on a two-way dialogue and remember people's likes and dislikes.

All you have to do is speak into the doll's embedded microphone while pressing and holding a button on its belt. "Hello Barbie" will then send a recording of your words over to ToyTalk, a San Francisco based-startup, which will formulate the doll's response and send it back via WiFi.

Mattel will constantly update Barbie's lexicon to include relevant pop culture data.

Good news, so that few years from now you won't have to worry about your conversations with "Hello Barbie" being so 2015.

Some parents aren't exactly receiving "Hello Barbie" with open arms, though. Concerned by the doll's interactive features, they've started calling it "Surveillance Barbie."

Their fear is that Mattel will use information from children's private conversations with their dolls, the recordings of which will be stored at ToyTalk, to create unfair and manipulative advertising campaigns.

  1. What do you think about "Hello Barbie"?

I wish this doll existed when I was a kid! It's awesome!
It's a little creepy, but I think it's pretty harmless.
This is a terrifying invention and my children are going nowhere near it.
