You Will Be Surprised How "Believe Me" Is Offending Religious Viewers
The movie "Believe Me", starring Parks & Recreation's Nick Offerman and Christopher McDonald from Requiem for a Dream, has religious leaders up in arms as it portrays church crowds as gullible sheep.
Believe Me, opening September 26, 2014, is about the charismatic leader of a scam operation that cheats thousands of church goers to donate to his "charity". Once a typical college student who focused his time on keg stands and fraternities more than studying, Sam Atwell (played by Alex Russell) receives a huge bill for his law school tuition and has to resort to create means. Sam teams up with three college friends and convinces them that he can scam thousands of church goers to donate him money.
Of course, there are your typical relationship dramas as well. Sam falls for his tour manager (as he expands his "charity" nation wide) who believes everything he is saying on stage. The problem is that Sam is blatantly lying. He isn't religious at all. When his manager Callie (played by starlet Johanna Bradley) discovers what he is doing with the donations, he must discover what he actually believes.
Riot Studios, the production company responsible for Believe Me, commented on the movie, "We're proud of what we've written in 'Believe Me,'" the studio says. "We're excited to hold up the mirror, not point the finger, at our religious culture in hopes of making you laugh a lot and think a lot about how Christians are perceived by others." So it's safe to say that Believe Me isn't a movie that's meant to aggravate Christian audiences, but to challenge what others think of the Christian community.
The supporting cast is outstanding. Fan favorite Nick Offerman will certainly bring viewers to the theater. Riot Studios hopes that it can educate audiences while making them laugh. Their previous film, "Beware of Christians," was a winner on the Christian film festival circuit and lauded by Gary Cogill, film critic for ABC Dallas affiliate WFAA-TV, as a "knockout film." It's safe to say that they know what they are doing.
You should go see Believe Me. It will be an outstanding film.
