Being a fan of Benedict Cumberbatch, when I heard that "The Fifth Estate" had the worst box office weekend of the year, I was surprised. Could they possibly mean worse than the Lone Ranger, because that was basically considered the flop of the year.
Which brings me to the question: how did this happen? Well, Julian Assange had quite the internet blitz of denouncing this movie and it seems even as someone who has seeked asylum in another country, he still has quite the power.
Also, this movie screamed (from the previews I saw) seemed more of a mind bending thriller than an action packed one, meaning that the decision for wide distribution might not have been the best idea for this movie. It screams artsy, intellectual movie making not blockbuster.
It also didn't help that you still have Gravity, Captain Phillips, Carrie, playing that weekend as well.
