1. Jamaica Inn - Launceston

Immortalised in Daphne Du Maurier's eponymous novel, Jamaica Inn is smugglers' territory. There are cutthroats and criminals aplenty, creaking stairs and haunted rooms, and a pretty nice restaurant to boot.

2. Bleeding Heart - London

After a dancing all night at a ball, 17th Century beauty Lady Elizabeth Hatton was thought to have been brutally murdered. Her corpse was found the following morning, still pumping blood over the cobbles: hence the name of London restaurant, The Bleeding Heart. You'll know it from it's blood red exterior. It's also possible to dine in the adjoining crypt, once used by Henry VIII for a wedding feast.

3. Bodmin Jail - Bodmin Moor

A prison constructed by its inmates during the reign of George III, Bodmin Jail is filled to the gunwales with ghouls and ghosts. Ghost walks run all year round and the restaurant menu offers 'life sentences'. It'll be a Halloween to remember!

4. Cardiff Castle - Cardiff

A castle with a history stretching all the way back to the Roman era is guaranteed to be hiding some spirits. Take a tour through the castle, in the pitch black, with only a spooky storyteller as your guide and see how confident you feel.

5. Fleur De Lys - Bath

A bar with no punters? How do you know it's not filled with ghosts? It probably is. The Fleur De Lys, however, is known for its friendly phantoms. The spot by the fire, for example, is taken by a gentleman ghost. Don't disturb him, he's just after a bit of quiet time with the paper.

6. Celtic Manor - Newport

Celtic Manor transforms at Halloween to indulge the kids in terrifying activities, pumpkin carving, face painting and general spookiness. The grounds are vast and sprawling so it's the perfect way to lose them – just for a little while.

7. Dalhousie Castle - Edinburgh

A banquet in the bowels of an ancient castle by candlelight. Dalhousie is one of the few places that requires Halloween attire. Don your ghastliest garbs and scare your dinner guests before heading into the cold night air for the ghost tour.

We've saved the best for last. The Dering Arms is located in one of the most haunted villages in Britain. Pluckley is home to Fright Corner and the Screaming Woods. Ghostly corpses hanging from trees are regular occurrences here. Let's hope it won't put you off your seafood.
