10 Reasons You Should Apply For Gonzaga's Honors Program

Because you really should apply.

1. You're a smart person? We like smart people!

We have lots of nerds, geeks, and normal/attractive/athletic people. This makes for lots of late-night, philosophical conversations (complete with cookies!) and classes that will challenge you.

2. Hopkins House

Gonzaga has a house on campus dedicated entirely to Honors students. No one actually lives there, but there's a living room, a complete kitchen, a music room, several computers, study rooms, a TV room, and the coolest people you'll meet on campus.

3. Free Printing!

This should really be all ten reasons. Hopkins has its own printer so we do all our printing there. I mean, why pay ten cents a page when you can print everything for free? It's really a no brainer.

4. More credits for free!

If you can't tell, we honors students like our free stuff. Whereas other students have to pay for every credit after 18, honors students can take up to 24 credits for free. That means you can double major without a problem. Or you can just take all the fun classes you want. Either way, it's free!

5. Study abroad, wherever you want.

One of the biggest perks of the honors program is that you can study abroad wherever you want. Other Gonzaga students have to choose from GU approved programs, but honors students can literally go wherever they want. We've had students in Oxford, New Zealand, Ghana, Chile...everywhere! And the best part? All your scholarships and financial aid go with you.

6. Honors retreats

We spend one of the first weekends of each semester on a program-wide retreat. In the fall, we go to Camp Reed where we canoe, swim, play volleyball, make s'mores, and just hang out. In the spring, we go to the Bozarth mansion where we play games and vote on ridiculous superlatives. Highlights from this year included most likely to be a Disney princess, most likely to marry their Tinder match, and most likely to cryogenically preserve themselves. They're great bonding experiences and a nice break from school work.

7. Honors classes

Most other college classes will be lecture-based. And that's fine and all, but it can get a little boring. Honors classes, on the other hand, are discussion-based and much more interactive. Plus, since we take many of our classes together, we really get to know each other. It's fun going to class filled with some of your best friends!

8. Father Clancy

Father Clancy is the director of the Honors Program and he's probably the coolest, most lovable priest you'll ever meet. Besides looking like Santa Claus, he really cares for all of the honors students. He will go to bat for you if you ever have scheduling problems and will write the best letters of recommendation. And he's just a super cool guy.

9. Community

Gonzaga is often praised for its community. It's big enough to meet someone new, but small enough that you'll always see someone you know. The Honors Program is Gonzaga's community on crack. You still get all of the Gonzaga community, but you also get 30 instant friends. We truly consider each other family. We take care of each other when we're sick. We take road trips together. We study for finals. Some of us even live together. The Honors community really is the best!
