Zoë Kravitz Addressed Criticism Of Her Mesh Gown At The Met Gala And Said It's The Reason She Left Social Media

    "I'm a human being."

Zoë Kravitz was among hundreds of Hollywood celebrities and otherwise influential folks who attended the 2021 Met Gala. Like everyone else, she dressed for the theme.

For anyone unfamiliar with the Costume Institute's famously exclusive annual fundraiser, there's a concept revealed ahead of time and those invited are asked to choose their attire accordingly. People arrived in a whole range of outfits last year, since the theme was "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion," and stylistically its parameters were pretty broad.

Zoë interpreted it like this. She wore a glittery, metallic mesh gown designed by Saint Laurent, which included a matching thong undergarment and was accessorized with sparkling earrings and strappy heels.

As stunning as she looked, the High Fidelity and Big Little Lies star's ensemble was met with somewhat mixed reviews. Zoë shut down a few social media critics who, at the time, suggested the dress revealed too much.

Zoë reflected on the criticism in a recent interview with Elle, where she explained how negative responses to her Met Gala apparel took a toll on her and briefly made her question wearing the dress at all.

"The fact that people don't think what they say affects a celebrity because you're not a person to them is crazy," she said. "I'm a human being. I want to fucking defend myself."

The experience also led Zoë to wipe her Instagram account and deliberately step back from the platform. "The fact that I'm like, 'Should I have not worn that?' No, I do what I want to do, and I make what I want to make, and if I'm now starting to be afraid of what other people are going to say or think, I'm no longer doing my job as an artist," she shared.

"I'm not experiencing the world and putting that into art. I'm walking on eggshells. Fuck that," Zoë added. "So, I needed to take a minute."
