David Lammy Was Mistaken For A Sierra Leone Presidential Candidate By His Local Newspaper

The Labour MP for Tottenham was confused with Julius Maada Bio.

David Lammy has been Labour MP for Tottenham, north London, for 15 years now.

So he was bemused to see this photo on the website of his local newspaper, the Haringey Independent.

If anyone knows who this guy is please let him know he's now the MP for Tottenham...

It turns out that the man in the photo is Julius Maada Bio, who was briefly the military dictator of Sierra Leone and a presidential candidate there in 2012.

Bio served as the military head of state of Sierra Leone for three months in 1996. Lammy has now started following him on Twitter.

The story has since been updated online to make clear that Lammy has decided not to run as Labour leader – and also to replace the photo.

Lammy told BuzzFeed News: "I would have preferred Denzel Washington."
