10 Frustrating Things About Long Distance Relationships

A list of experiences from me to you

1. It's a Love / Hate Thing

Living in such an accessible society, long distance relationshipers are now blessed with the ability to video chat. Which we can all be thankful for.

Problem:

You may find that over time that excitement to video call will slowly (Rapidly) grow into frustration simply because it just reminds you that you can’t be with them.

Tip:

Mix it up! By all means still video chat but also incorporate emails, letters and phone calls. It will help keep the communication fresh between the two of you.

2. The Time Difference WILL Get To You

Problem:

Make sure you are aware of the time zones you will both be in. It may seem like an obvious factor but you have to realise that if you are on different continents, you will either spend every morning / every evening without them. Which I’m sure you can guess, truly sucks.

Tip:

There’s not really much you can do about this one, Just try and figure out a schedule that works for the two of you and simply stick to it. Otherwise being on such different timetables may lead you to getting caught up in your own things, forgetting to make time for him/her.

3. Com.. muni.. cation?!

Miscommunication can be an unnecessary problem between the two of you. Did you know that non verbal communication (such as body language and tone) plays a much larger role when communicating with someone over verbal?

Problem:

Therefore when you communicate over a written or video chat. Your ability to communicate as well, can lack. Causing things to be misconstrued.

Tip:

So don’t just assume your partner understands you, you have to make time to express to them what you’re thinking and how you're feeling, this will help compensate for there only being verbal communication.

4. Plain and Simple - Arguing is Inevitable

Don’t kid yourself and think this time apart will be a breeze, arguments may arise, but don’t panic. It doesn’t mean you guys aren't working out or any nonsense like that.

Tip:

Just come to realise that 99% of the time there is no real problem and the frustration of being so far apart can be the real catalyst for the arguments. You may feel angry at the situation, not the person. So if you get into an argument just try to recognise this may be the case.

5. The Closure of Comfort

To extend from number 4. If you have just had a shouting match for the passed hour and you’ve finally made up, it can sometimes (all the time) feel unresolved. Simply because you need their comfort to make you feel close again. Being so far away you can’t just give them a kiss or hug to make them feel better, which puts you in limbo, where you want more than just words.

6. Holiday Specials

Problem:

Think long and hard over what holidays you guys are likely to miss. You may think it won’t be as bad as you anticipate. But it will be. You May even result in postponing the day altogether due the fact you're finding it too hard to not be with one another.

Tip:

Regardless of this, do your upmost to have the best day possible as it will bring some normality back into the relationship a midst all of the long distance agro.

For Example:

For Valentine’s Day be creative in figuring out ways that you can be as close as possible. You can do this by cooking together, if you are both food illiterate, then ordering the same takeout and eating it together works just as well. Plan a movie marathon or even download two player games to play against each other (Hint: go with Monopoly).

7. You'll be Horny AF

It doesn’t take a genius to know that spending 6 months away from the person you love and are intimate with will have an effect on a few things. You’ll start to crave human contact.

Tip:

If the distance is too great and seeing each other isn’t an option, accepting this fact is a good start. Even phone sex and dirty talk will lose its novelty after a while, so what to do? (And before you think it, no, that doesn’t mean go out and cheat!) something as simple as finding a physical outlet through sport will help your frustration, ALOT.

8. Poor Connection

Problem:

This one is probably out of your control but a bad Wi-Fi connection will grow to be one of your biggest enemy. When all you want to do is quickly say goodnight, but the other person is just one big blur, or even worse; when the constant “Please wait… trying to reconnect” message is the uninvited third wheel, you may lose some patience.

Tip:

If you are in a position where it is possible, go to your landlord and tell them it needs improving. Considering the way we live today, It is no longer a luxury to have a working internet connection. Being able to hear or see the face of a loved one can make all the difference to not feeling alone in a new place.

9. Visitor Blues

If you guys get the chance to see your other half, do not hesitate for one second. DO IT. Even if it’s for a weekend, it could be all that you guys need to reconnect.

Problem:

However, in this time together your mind will be working a mental countdown. Painfully counting the minutes in your head, until you have to part once again.

Tip:

Just be thankful for the precious time you get together. Try not to worry about them leaving. Plan things to do or just spend an entire weekend in bed. Whatever suits you best, just make sure you have fun.

10. Other Couples

Problem:

Seeing other couples happy will make you feel a bit sick. You’ll want to throw something at them, seriously. You’ll almost feel like they know what you’re going through and that they’re simply rubbing it in your face that they can be together.

Tips:

Take the pressure off, laugh and have fun. If you are constantly wrapped up in how bad the situation is and how much you miss them you are just going to make the time go so much slower and so much harder before you are back together.

All in all, you know its not going to be forever so stay positive guys, power through and you'll be great :D.
