Yesterday, the Republican-controlled Alabama Senate voted to approve a near-total ban on abortion in the Southern US state.
The vote followed the state of Georgia outlawing abortion after the point at which a doctor can detect a fetal heartbeat — usually around 6 weeks and before many women are even aware they're pregnant.
Numerous celebrities have spoken out against the bans, including Alyssa Milano, who told BuzzFeed News that she will boycott TV shows and movies shot or produced in the affected states.
Well, now Jameela Jamil has joined the conversation, sharing her own experience of abortion in her denouncement of the bans.
After Georgia outlawed abortion, Jameela tweeted that the decision was "upsetting," "inhumane," and "demonstrative of a hatred of women."
Jameela went on to reveal that she had had an abortion when she was younger, calling the decision the "best [she's] ever made." Jameela added that having children before being "emotionally, psychologically and financially" ready can "ruin lives."
She went on to suggest that the laws will lead to an inundation of "unwanted children" deprived of sufficient care.
Jameela also claimed that the abortion bans will affect marginalised women the most.
Then, after hearing that an attempt to exempt survivors of rape and incest from the bill in Alabama had failed, Jameela updated her Twitter thread, calling the decision "truly disgusting."
She suggested that some supporters of the bill held anti-gay and anti-trans views despite being against abortion.
And she also responded to people criticising her for having an abortion, especially men who she said have "no idea" about "motherhood or pregnancy," adding that she wasn't ready or willing to become a parent at the time.
