Here's Why Kim Kardashian Is Actually A Feminist Despite Saying She's Not

She may have revealed that she doesn't think she's a feminist, but she's done a lot over the last nine years that would suggest otherwise.

Late last week Kim Kardashian made the revelation that she doesn't think she's a feminist.

Speaking at the BlogHer16 conference, Kim said: "Everyone always says, 'Are you a feminist?' And I don't think I am. I don't like labels. I do what makes me happy and I want women to be confident, and I'm so supportive of women. But I'm not the 'free the nipple'-type girl."

As pointed out in this post, it's pretty clear that for Kim, the word "feminism" evokes images of women refusing to wear bras and hating men. If that's your thing, that's fine, but it's also a pretty reductive view of what feminism actually is.

So let's go over this once more for Kim and anyone else who may be confused: Feminism is the belief that women should have political, social, and economic equality with men.

It is not man-hating. It is the belief that women should have the same rights, opportunities, and power as men. Simple.

What's ironic about this situation is that Kim has done many, many things over the last nine years that are arguably feminist acts.

Let's take a look back.

1. Kim is faced with sexism and misogyny every single day – mainly every time the words "she's only famous because of a sex tape" are spoken.

She's arguably the most slut-shamed celebrity in history, and all because a sex tape was leaked without her consent. People say that's the only reason for her fame – but saying that completely disregards the fact that we're almost A DECADE on from that sex tape leaking, and her career is going from strength to strength.

2. And yet she's never been afraid to shut down the sexism and slut-shaming that she's endured. Earlier this year she even wrote an essay on the subject.

It always seems to come back around to my sex tape. Yes, a sex tape that was made 13 years ago. 13 YEARS AGO. And people still want to talk about it?!?! I lived through the embarrassment and fear, and decided to say, "Who cares, do better, move on." I shouldn't have to constantly be on the defense, listing off my accomplishments just to prove that I am more than something that happened 13 years ago.

3. But what's even more of a feminist statement is taking that act of misogyny and turning it into a MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR EMPIRE for herself and her entire family.

Let's get one thing clear: The reason Kim is still famous after NINE YEARS is not because of a sex tape. It's down to making extremely savvy business decisions.

She not only stars in and executive-produces the most successful reality TV show of all time, but she's also recently created three apps that are more emblematic of her success than anything.

All three apps are about her life, and they generate hundreds of millions of dollars – which is FAR more than her fee for Keeping Up With the Kardashians. She has essentially monetised her entire existence, to the extent that the money she earns from being filmed going about her everyday life is just a fraction of the amount she makes from charging people to see pictures, videos, and emojis of stuff they've ALREADY SEEN.

She was turned into a commodity without her consent, but has since transformed that into a brand, overcoming and capitalising on the violation of her privacy and sexuality to become one of the richest, most famous women on the planet. If that's not the ultimate display of girl power, I don't know what is.

4. She's a strong purveyor of the idea that women really can have it all. Which is possible BECAUSE OF feminism.

This even came up in the latest season of KUWTK, when Kim agreed to star in Fergie's new video for "Milf Money". Kim said: "I love the message behind the song – it's really about empowering women, to show them they can be a mom, be a great wife, have a great career – they really can do it all."

She also addressed this in her essay on sexism, saying: "It's 2016. The body-shaming and slut-shaming – it's like, enough is enough. I will not live my life dictated by the issues you have with my sexuality. You be you and let me be me. I am a mother. I am a wife, a sister, a daughter, an entrepreneur and I am allowed to be sexy."

5. She owns her sexuality – because gender equality and sexuality are not mutually exclusive – and she posts photos of herself that she's proud of and not for the male gaze.

Her nude selfies cause uproar whenever she posts them, but really they're just expressions of liberation. She's owning her body and sexuality, and she posts the photos because she feels good about herself. And the best part of all is that she's confirmed the photos aren't for the male gaze.

She also likes to instil body positivity in other women. She recently revealed: "I do shoots that are nude, and I don't want to say every girl, but all my girlfriends send me these sexy selfies of themselves, just being like, 'Oh, my god, I've been working out for two weeks — look at how good of shape I'm in.' Girls send them to each other."

Perhaps the main reason for her naked selfies sparking such a reaction is that we're used to seeing men being confident and proud of their bodies – when they post shirtless photos they're not lambasted online – but we're not used to seeing the same from women. AKA why we need feminism in the first place.

6. And the way she presents her body on KUWTK is all for women.

One of the best parts of KUWTK is the way Kim, Kourtney, and Khloé speak about their bodies – specifically, their vaginas – with brutal honesty, in a way that is pretty rare in pop culture. They talk about their vaginas serving functions other than sex, they filmed the births of their children, they've been honest about fertility struggles – even to the extent of Kim allowing cameras to film her injecting herself as part of the process to freeze her eggs.

7. She's achieved success in a male-dominated industry.

Kim's made the transition from reality TV star to tech mogul over the past few years, despite it being a male-dominated industry. She launched a paid-for app that encompasses every element of her as a person – from cute photos of North and Saint to her fashion and beauty tips. She also created Kimojis, another paid-for app, which gives users access to over 500 Kim-themed emojis and GIFs. But the most successful component of her move into tech is her mobile game, Kim Kardashian: Hollywood. It's been downloaded 45 million times, generating $165 million in revenue. It's estimated that Kim has made $45 million from the game since it launched in January 2014. This week it officially became the highest-grossing mobile game centred around a person of all time.

8. And, when she was asked how she'd like to be remembered, her answer was as badass as they come.
