Emma Thompson Revealed How She Made That "Love Actually" Crying Scene So Fucking Real

She drew on her own experiences after her first husband had an affair.

It's highly likely that some time over the past 15 years you'll have seen Love Actually.

And you will almost certainly remember the heartbreaking scene in which Emma Thompson's character realises that her husband may be cheating on her.

It culminates with Emma standing in her bedroom listening to Joni Mitchell and sobbing as her family open Christmas presents in the other room.

Despite it being completely brutal, for many people it's their favourite scene in the movie.

Well, Emma has now revealed that part of the reason why the scene feels so heartbreakingly real is because she based her performance on real-life experience.

Speaking at a recent fundraising event, Emma revealed that her heart had been "very badly broken" by her first husband Kenneth Branagh after he began an affair with Helena Bonham Carter.

    She said:

That scene where my character is standing by the bed crying is so well known because it's something everyone's been through. I had my heart very badly broken by Ken, so I knew what it was like to find the necklace that wasn't meant for me. Well, it wasn't exactly that, but we've all been through it.

Well now I'm going to cry even harder at the scene.
