12 Reasons You Should Be Watching Outlander

Outlander, a Starz television series based off of novels by Diana Gabaldon, is a genre-bending, sexy adventure. The TV adaptation has stayed true to the plot and has enhanced the experience with the natural beauty of the land and the cast members.

1. Scotland is beautiful

The adventure begins in 1945 in the superstitious city of Inverness, located in the Scottish highlands. There Claire Beauchamp Randall visits the standing stones of Craigh na Dun and is flung back in time to 1743. The castles and rolling hills of the Scottish highlands are a breathtaking backdrop to the story.

2. Claire Beauchamp is a kickass protagonist

Don't underestimate Claire Beauchamp (played by Caitriona Balfe) . The WWII British army nurse is more than capable of looking after herself, despite being thrown back in time 200 years.

3. She heals the wounded

Is there something suspicious about asking for methylate in 1740 Scotland?

4. She saves a wee Scottish boy from an unsightly punishment

For stealing a loaf of bread, the boy must either lose his hand or spend an hour with his ear nailed to a post. Claire takes a risk by helping the boy leave the post with his ear still *mostly* intact.

Claire finds herself with Clan Mackenzie who ruled parts of the highlands as early as 1297. Claire learns that the clan is working to fund the Jacobite rebellion of 1745, and knows they are destined to fail, ultimately destroying clan life and killing thousands of scots.
