56 Home Products That Renters Swear By

There's only so much leeway you have when you're on a lease, but these products really make the difference — according to fellow renters.

    1. A set of Snug Plugs if your hair dryer plug keeps falling out of the bathroom outlet and you're starting to wonder if you need to get your landlord involved. These little contraptions make a snug fit between outlets and plugs to keep 'em where you want.

Promising review: "These are SUCH a game-changer. We rent, so I can't do much about the loose outlets around the house. These have made several outlets usable again!" —Minerva G.

    2. garbage disposal brush so you can safely clear the leftovers outta there without grossly (and unsafely) sticking your fingers down there. (Go watch the great horror movie To Let and then you'll *really* wanna buy this.)

Promising review: "I bought this because we moved into a rental duplex for a short time after selling our home. In my home I never had black food, mold, junk on the rubber part of the garbage disposal side until I rented. I hated sticking my hand with even a glove on and napkin. But this I can twist it inside and all around over and over and get it clean. I then run HOT, HOT water on it, and spray Lysol after I'm done. Will be buying one for my daughter." —Cyrilla B.

Get it from Amazon for $9.30.

    3. A power scrubber brush that'll attach to your drill/driver to help get at all those messes left over from past tenants. Work smarter, not harder.

Useful Products is a US-based small business established in 2007 by car wash owner, electrician, and former bodybuilder Anthony LaPolla that specializes in drill-cleaning brushes and attachments.

Each of the different brush colors indicates which tasks the brushes are meant for based on their bristle type, so be sure to check which one is best suited for whatever you need to for! Yellow is the “all-purpose” medium bristle, but some are softer and harder depending on what types of surfaces you’re cleaning (but none of them will scratch!).

Promising review: "Superb. Had spent hours trying to scrub away probably years of dirt from the bathtub in my new rented place. Also hurt my shoulder in the process of hand scrubbing. This thing finished the job in under 10 minutes. Simple but genius." —David

Get it from Amazon for $18.95 (available in six colors).

    4. A jar of the The Pink Stuff — a cleaning paste made to handle all kinds of inherited sticky, stuck-on situations like this nasty-looking kitchen faucet.

Promising review: "We rent a home and have been dismayed at how easily and badly the ceramic kitchen sink gets stained. I tried everything to remove the stains, but nothing worked until I bought this! I left it on for two minutes and then scrubbed it around. Didn’t have to scrub hard. And then when I rinsed it off with hot water, the stains were gone! The sink is sparkling white again. 100% recommend!" —Katherine Patterson

Get it from Amazon for $5.97.

    5. A set of flame-retardant socket sealers can help seal out the cold air that tends to leak inside through your outlets — which was a fun new discovery for you.

The 24-piece set includes 16 outlet sealers, 6 switch plates, and 2 decorative covers.

Promising review: "I never even knew these things existed until I was reading on a blog about little, inexpensive ways to insulate your home. Since I rent, I don't have a lot of options. I was pleasantly surprised to see how inexpensive they were. They are super-easy and quick to install. A lot of cold air comes in from outlets and light switches that are on the outside walls. When you install these sealers, you will immediately notice a difference. I even used the leftover pieces of foam that you pop out from outlet sealers to stuff into a large gap that exists in one of my window frames!" —Carrie

Get the 24-piece set from Amazon for $8.49.

    6. A mold and mildew removal gel that'll turn back time on your shower surround in a mere six hours. (Can't wait for Cher to drop that remix.)

Promising review: "Bro, TikTok made me buy this, and honestly, it's incredible. I rent so I'm not going to re-grout my shower, and it looks brand new. I had bleached and scrubbed and done everything, and nothing compared to this." —Punx Bby

Get it from Amazon for $14.99.

    7. Fridge bin liners to absorb extra moisture in an effort to keep your produce fresher for longer. PLUS, they'll catch the brunt of messy spills and will be so much easier to clean than taking a drawer out of the fridge and awkwardly scrubbing it down in your sink. I've done that before and it's not great!

    Amazon

Promising review: "Ever since I started using these felt/fabric fridge liners, I haven't been able to have a fridge without them. It's been at least three or four years now. They're extremely hard to come by in stores, so I'm glad I found a six-pack on Amazon. I don't usually wash them because I move to a new place every year (renting), and just by new ones, but I'll try washing them this time around. I use four sheets, and it's enough for door pouches, drawers, and shelves. I cut them to fit into the door areas/pouches. Highly recommend." —Libby Audrey

    8. Wood polish and conditioner that'll totally revamp those worn-out wooden cabinets you have to live with, along with curbside finds and hand-me-down furniture that's seen better days but will have to make do 'til you move to a bigger place. Promising review: "I rent an old home, and our front door is original to the house (from the 1930s). It's wood with glass panes, and it was faded and dry. I put some of this on it, and the door looks AMAZING. It looks like I stained it, but I just used this! So happy with the result." —Kali

    9. A no-scrub weekly shower cleaner you can simply just spray on after you shower, wait 8–12 hours while it tackles mold and mildew stains, soap scum, and just about any gross grime without YOU having to scrub. Talk about practical to the max.

    Amazon

Psst, I use this with great success on my shower in my rental apartment!

Promising review: "Bought this because of the reviews, and I’m not disappointed. I moved into a rental house that had a dirty tub with those yellow ring stains. I couldn’t get on my knees and scrub them, so I was excited to try this product. It took three sprays with drying time in between, but they are almost invisible. But do be careful because the residue can leave a slippery surface, which the directions warn about." —Michele

    11. A grout pen that's as simple to use as coloring in the lines so you don't have to stare at the stained grout and imagine what it used to look like. Grout takes up a teeny bit of space but, as you can see from the pics, makes a huge impact!

    closeup of the draft stopper

Promising review: "Amazing!! I’m renting a VERY DRAFTY apartment currently, and it’s been driving me insane. The front AND garage door are both drafty!! I got these with low expectations that they’d really help since it seems like everywhere has a draft; not just the doors. WOW the difference they’ve made by the doors is huge!! So easy to install, super quick, and they actually work great!!" —Bre

Get it from Amazon for $9.99 (available in four colors).

    14. And an insulated soundproofing strip even the LEAST handy person can stick on their door to help get some peace and quiet, even if your kid is playing video games at *peak* volume in the living room.

Psst — this insulated strip also stops air conditioning from escaping out of the crack around the door, saving energy and money!

Promising review: "Used to seal around the inside of my front door frame. My previous weather stripping is basically nonexistent. There’s about an inch and a half gap between frame and door, I could literally feel the breeze from three feet away on colder days. We rent our home so we can only do so much as far as alterations go. The way our front door lock and stripping was we were unable to do much to stop the air gap/breeze. This stuff stuck SO easily and STAYS! It fit perfectly along the inside of the actual door itself and is doing an amazing job at keeping cold air OUT! So glad I stumbled on this randomly. This WORKS and can be used for many different things!! GREAT BUY!" —Symone

Get it from Amazon for $8.97 (available in four colors).

    15. An adjustable window screen that'll fit a variety of window widths to help facilitate a crisp breeze... without the bugs.

the same shower completely white with no rust

Promising review: "This is the ONLY product that has gotten the horrible rust/hard water/iron stains out of the toilet in the older house we’re currently renting. I’ve scrubbed and scrubbed with pumice stones, and other products that promised to get these ugly stains out; none of them have worked, except for Iron Out. 10/10 would recommend to everyone with similar issues. It also managed to get rust and hard water stains out of my bathroom sink, and bath tub." —Roo

Promising review: "After using this product, I am happy to report that my $5 investment saved me over $500. I was ready to replace my dishwasher due to super cloudy glasses, residue, and dishes just not getting clean. Then, I became aware that the water softener was no longer doing its job so I had the rental company replace it. Dishwasher performance improved somewhat. I decided to do two more loads before deciding to purchase a new one. Then I saw a product test review for Affresh. I was ordering some stuff from Amazon anyway so I added that to my order. When it came, I tossed one of the tablets into the bottom of the full machine per the instructions and ran the regular cycle. I did not expect the results I got! The glassware that I thought was permanently etched and ruined came out like new. Same with cutlery. The difference is unbelievable. I will use this faithfully every month, as recommended. I can even put it on my subscribe and save order so I will get a new pack every six months. I am amazed!" —Sheila

    19. Under-cabinet lights can make your kitchen look so much more expensive and help set a mood that'll actually make you wanna cook.

I live in a rental, and I can't paint or make any holes in the wall so it's hard to make updates, [and this] brightened up that corner wonderfully. They have a great range of dimmest to brightest. Very easy to use and install. I'm really happy with this purchase." —Zoe

tub with lots of foaming dirt in it
    tub running with clear water

You run your bath, add the cleaner, watch the gunk emerge, drain your bath, and then clean off the gunk!

Promising review: "Holy crap, this stuff works, and the name speaks for itself. I’m a big cleaner, and I always clean my jetted tub after every use. We rent our house, and when we moved in, I used bleach to clean out the lines. Recently, though, I noticed a bit of mold in the jets so I snagged this. As soon as the water hit the first jet, I started to see 'sludge' come out and start to clump. As it reached higher, I was mortified. Once I turned the jets ON, dear lord it was over. I wanted to throw up. This stuff WORKS, and I will forever buy it until I no longer have a jet tub." —Charlie

Promising review: "I bought these lights to add some character to my plain rental apartment drapes, and I am so glad I did. They are so beautiful and easy to handle with eight different ON settings. The warm light is very gentle and not overly bright. I haven't had any issues with these lights yet. Beige carpet after using the spray, showing how the stain is now gone

Promising review: "This product is AMAZING! I am renting a house where the previous owners had a cat, so I could smell the ammonia odor from cat pee every once in awhile. I tried everything to get rid of that odor; then I saw an ad for this stuff, and I figured I would give it a try. I mean, why not?? OMG. It worked. And it worked fast! The orange smell is amazing, but it didn't last long. But that's ok! The cat smell was gone!!!!! And it never returned. It's almost as if the Angry Orange spray grabbed it out of the wood floor and took it away, forever! I couldn't be more happy! Thank you to whoever invented this stuff, you are a godsend!!!" —Vicki Clena

    24. A Tubshroom that'll catch an ALARMING amount of hair that'd otherwise go down your drain and eventually lead to a messy clog. (FYI: once you see a drain snaked, you can't unsee it.)

reviewer pic of tubshroom that caught a bunch of dog fur in a bath
another reviewer's pic of top view of the tubshroom with hair caught around it

It's scary how well this works.

Promising review: "At risk of being dramatic, this is the best purchase I have made on Amazon. I have curly hair, and those of us who are blessed with textured hair don’t brush our hair. So showering causes literal tumbleweeds. After snaking/Drano-ing the drain in our rented apartment one too many times, I bought this, and I’m never going back." —Laurie

Get it from Amazon for $12.99+ (available in six colors).

    25. A fresh new set of switch plates that'll help 'em blend into those (hopefully!) freshly painted walls, even if the landlord painted the switch plates to match (YOU CAN STILL TELL). Can you screw in a screw? Then you can handle this transformative swap.

Promising review: "We got this for the house we rent because the front door had a big piece of glass that was very cloudy, but you could still see through it. We put it in both sides, and the door looks so much better as well as gives an extra sense of privacy. Easy instillation and directions were easy to follow." —BreAnna Vaughan

Get it from Amazon for $8.99+ (available in 11 sizes).

closeup of double hook shower curtain hook
    Elizabeth Lilly / BuzzFeed

I detest loop shower rings because they're such a hassle when you're swapping out a shower liner or taking down your shower curtain to wash it. Yep, these are my shower hooks, and they're sturdy enough to stay balanced when you switch out the liner or shower curtain.

Promising review: "Shower curtain rings really aren't a huge deal, but when you move from rental to rental just about every year, every little thing to make moving in/out is appreciated. These are the easiest thing I've ever used, and I will continue using and replacing them with the same product every time." —Jamie Wengert

Get a 12-pack from Amazon for $12.98+ (available in three finishes).

    28. A marble lookalike of self-adhesive film because a bath remodel is not in the stars but you can fake a new countertop on the cheap. All ya' need is this and a bit of patience.

Promising review: "Excellent quality! I was worried because of the price it would be very thin, and I was using this to cover to my sink so I wanted something thicker, and was pleasantly surprised! I cleaned the counter and dried thoroughly and then used a credit card and razor blade to easily apply. The results made my bathroom look 1,000x better, and since I'm renting, I was worried about it not coming off easily, however when I was applying the paper, it was easy to take off and readjust." —Neha

Get it from Amazon for $16.30.

    29. Green Gobbler Drain Clog Dissolver that'll do a far better job of clearing your bathroom or kitchen drains than the super well-known brand you usually grab. Because clogs never happen at convenient moments.

My bathroom sink tends to stop up far too easily, and this does a drastically better job of clearing the gunk than Drano or Liquid Plumr. I also love that it's noncorrosive (I live in a pre-war apartment building with old pipes) and odorless (no one loves feeling like a bug being fumigated in their own home)!

Promising review: "I rent an apartment with older pipes, and the most useless hair-catchers known to man in my bathtub. I also happen to have a cripplingly large amount of hair — seriously, I'm like a 5'8" troll doll. Anyway, aside from burning out every vacuum cleaner I've ever looked at, my hair clogs drains. I needed something gentle enough to not damage the building's ancient pipes, but tough enough to melt the solid hunk of head foliage that had formed a blockade against my bathwater.

This was the perfect solution. Followed the directions and left it for about 45 minutes, then flushed it out with boiling water. Cleared things right up. When I inevitably have to clear the drains again, because my hair is thicc and sneaky, this is what I'll buy. No super caustic smell. Takes a bit longer than some of the harsher chemical stuff, but for me, the trade-off was worth it." —Elizabeth Topolosky

Get it from Amazon for $11.97.

huge nest of hair taken from a sink drain

Promising review: "Rented a home that a family with small children used to live in, and our bathroom sink drained slow due to long hair clogging the drain. I was worried that this hook may not reach the clog, but it pulled a nice chunk of hair out and fixed our sink.

I recommend wearing gloves (and maybe a face mask/old shirt or clothes if your especially squeamish) as this thing may kind of fling some of the hair/goo onto your hands or clothes as you pull it out of the drain. Not reusable, but for the price, not a problem."—RCinOK

    Amazon

Promising review: "OMG, you won’t believe what came out of our shower drain… I noticed when we showered, the water was puddling on the floor instead of properly draining. My husband got this tool, and it works great! There are baby dolls, a toilet paper holder…like what!! If you’re a clean freak like me and you are renting, you need it." —Ashlyn Bronner

Get it from Amazon for $9.99.

    35. An oil stain remover capable of annihilating that grease stain from when your cousin parked his junker in your driveway.

Promising review: "We rent a house, and my mom parked her car in the driveway while we went on vacation. When she left and went home, we noticed an approx. 10 x 10 spot. Being that we rent and the fact that spots on the driveway look ugly, I purchased this, and it pulled the stain right out. When it was all said and done, where the spot was looked just like the rest of the driveway! Awesome! Super easy to use. Just follow the directions." —Dan

Promising review: "I rent a house in the Houston, Texas, area, and the landlord planted numerous trees and plants in the backyard. Things grow without trying here so there is a lot to be trimmed. When I received the lopper, I started trimming a bush that had grown across a pathway. Its 'branches' were about half an inch think, and this lopper cut through them so easily, I was amazed. I then began dancing around the yard trimming branches and trees that were probably up to a little bigger than 1 1/2 inches. People saw me and asked to try it, but I wouldn't let them. There are many reviewers who have used this appliance in between working appliances.

Promising review: "This is an absolutely life-changing product! It’s so wonderful to be able to rent and not have to go to the laundromat. This is very much worth every penny. :) I’ve used it a few times now, and I have no complaints. I think even when I get a house, I will continue using this because you aren't wasting any water; you are using exactly what you need for each load. Plus, I can’t imagine how much money you would be saving using the 5-minute spin dryer a couple times vs. running your average drier for 40+ minutes. It holds way more laundry than I thought. Every time I’m doing a load, I can’t shut up about how much I love my cute little washer." —Kelsey rush

Promising review: "This SAVED me my rent deposit!! I had stupidly put pots on the floor thinning the terra-cotta tray wouldn’t mold through to the wood floor (wrong!).

This took the mold and water damage right off! I did first try baking soda/water mixture which helped get the mold off, but these wipes are what saved the water damage! Any light-colored water damage will be easily fixed by this, but it seemed that any dark or black-water damage wasn’t fixable with this." —Al

This covered everything up, even one bottle did a lot, and I still have some left. It even covered some stains I had from black hair dye on my walls and doors." —Amazon Customer

It's from a family-run small business that specializes in cleaning products, especially ones for homes with pets!

Promising review: "I’m always on the lookout for products that can clean up after my messy dog and cat, so I thought I’d give this a try. I rent a duplex, so the carpet is to be desired, to say the least, but I want to make it look as best as I can. After several months of not being able to shampoo the carpet, I had doggie prints, faded stains, and grungy high traffic areas that didn’t get as clean with just spot treating them. I was able to get most of the carpet cleaned with just a half gallon. I thought it had a good clean smell to it, but it also deep cleaned like I hadn’t been able to do in the past two years I’ve lived in my place!" —Danielle Edlund

Promising review: "Holy moly! These traps work. I've used other ones that took days. These? They were catching while I assembled them. We rent, and no matter what I do, these moths persist. These traps are worth every penny. I'd pay twice the amount and not complain because they really work." —Traveling mom

Dozens of flies on one clear sticky strip placed on reviewer's window

Promising review: "I'm renting from a house that does not have a screen door, and I have two young children who run in and out. They bring a lot of flies with them. I've tried several different things... But what's amazing about this is that you stick it on the window, you walk away, and you let the paper do all the work for you.

Here are two pretty important recommendations with this: 1. Stick the paper in the corner of the window. It makes a huge difference. 2. Give it at least 72 hours. If you're on the fence like I was, go ahead and get the 12-pack. You'll be so happy you'll subscribe and save for the 24-pack when you're out." —Meaghan

Promising review: "These are amazing!! Used them to hang string lights on my patio, and I can’t recommend them enough. Promising review: "We rented a home, and the toilets were disgusting. Someone suggested a pumice stone, and let me tell you, it was amazing!! The picture is after just five minutes with the stone. I tried bleach, every toilet bowl cleaner available, and countless hours of scrubbing to no avail...but this stone worked instantly! I will be buying several more!! The stone does dissolve when scrubbing so you need a couple. I was able to do almost two toilets completely that looked awful with one stone!!" —CristaCross

    50. A incredibly powerful grout cleaner to erase years of nasty build-up that you've just come to live with over the years.

Promising review: "I used this on the grout on my kitchen floor. I rent and have always assumed the grout was a black/dark gray. I have scrubbed the floor many times during ordinary cleaning, and it had stayed as it was. I bought this on a whim. I did not have any reason to believe that I would end up with the realization that the grout in our kitchen is actually a very pleasant BEIGE color. It was even kind of gross, how well it worked. The stuff that came up must have been YEARS worth of gunk. Highly recommend." —TeacherG

All of their products are made from powerful, plant-based ingredients and packaged with recyclable materials. My Shopping team colleague/fellow renter Danielle Healy is a fan (she took the photos above!), saying:

"I recently moved into a new apartment, so lately, I've been cleaning A LOT. Shortly after moving in, my partner and I went to store something on the top of the kitchen cabinets only to find them caked in a thick layer of grime. 🤢 After going at it with regular multipurpose cleaner (with little success), we broke out the scour paste as a last-ditch effort, and OH BOY, did this miracle product deliver (pics above). If it can handle that grossness, it's going to have no problem with day-to-day messes like soap scum and burnt-on food. Plus, it smells delightful and comes in minimal, low-waste packaging!"

This thing stuck where other suctioned products could not. I can’t believe it. After buying this, it made the bath situation 1,000% better. I am able to fill the tub nearly all the way up, making baths so much more enjoyable. I love it." —Emma

Promising review: "We rent a house that has textured tiles and is a HUGE pain to mop. I can't use a sponge mop, and running around with a dripping yarn mop was a nightmare. This mop was a game-changer. I can mop all over the house, spin out excess water, and keep going! Also saved me when my daughter's bathroom toilet overflowed. I was able to clean up the water without having to use towels. Just tossed the mop head into a bleach wash, and good as new. I recommend this mop to everyone I know." —Samantha C
