    24 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Taylor Swift, But Should

    She breaks records and changes the rules.

    1. Taylor began her singing career auditioning for Broadway shows, but never made it onto the stage. She turned to country music after realising she loved the storytelling aspect of musical theatre.

    2. At the age of 14, she walked out of a development contract with RCA Records after they encouraged her to record songs written by other people.


    She told her mom she didn't want to record any songs other than her own, and had to end her deal with the label after her year-long contract ended. Scott Borchetta, the owner of Taylor's eventual record label Big Machine, said the move was "unheard of" in the music industry.

    3. She wrote "Our Song" for a ninth-grade talent show, and decided to include it on her first album after classmates kept coming up to her in the halls and singing lines back to her.

    That debut album, Taylor Swift, has now sold more than 5.7 million copies.

    4. Taylor went on to win the prestigious CMA Horizon Award after releasing her first album, and ended her acceptance speech with, "This is definitely the highlight of my senior year."


    5. With "Love Story", Taylor became the first person ever to have a song reach number 1 on both Billboard's Pop and Country music charts.

    6. After the success of Fearless, Taylor would go to her friend Abigail's college classes and her brother's dorm rooms just to experience life as a normal 19-year-old.

    7. When asked about her status as a role model, Taylor said she "thinks about a million people when she [gets] dressed in the morning".


    "It would be really easy to say, 'I'm 21 now! I do what I want! You raise your kids!'", she said on 60 Minutes in 2011. "But that's not the truth of it. The truth of it is that every singer out there with songs on the radio is raising the next generation. So make your words count."

    8. She wrote the entirety of her third album, Speak Now, by herself after critics questioned her songwriting ability. She worked on it between the ages of 18 and 20.

    9. After a bout of tornados struck the southern US in 2011, Taylor opened up the final dress rehearsal of her Speak Now Tour to the public in order to raise money for the victims. The night made over $750,000.

    10. In 2012, she wrote "Ronan", a song dedicated to a little boy who died from neuroblastoma, after reading a blog post written by his mother.

    Ronan's mother Maya is credited as a co-writer of the song, and all proceeds from its sales go to cancer-fighting charities.

    11. After 1989 won the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album, Taylor became the first and only artist in history to win both Best Pop Album and Best Country Album.

    She was also the youngest artist to ever receive the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2010 for Fearless, and is one of only two female artists (the other one is Adele) to win the award twice.

    12. In 2014, Taylor hand-picked a few dedicated fans from social media and sent them Christmas presents, in some cases actually showing up at their houses to deliver them herself.

    Included in one of the Christmas packages was a check for $1,989 to help pay off a fan's student loans.

    13. And earlier this year, she sent two fans flowers and a note on their wedding day after one of them used Taylor's lyrics to propose to the other.

    14. She has said she spends so much time interacting with fans online because her life is so abnormal that it helps her to stay in touch with fans who lead normal lives.

    "When I go on Instagram and I see a post from Emma who lives in Philadelphia and she's talking about how her day was at school that day, that helps me," she told Barbra Walters. "It's the only thing that keeps me not feeling overwhelmed by the abnormality of my life."

    15. In 2015, Taylor quietly donated $15,000 to a firefighter who saved his own wife and son from a car crash after it was reported the family didn't have medical insurance.

    16. There's also a rumour that Taylor donated up to $4,000 to a fan after he told her he was homeless at one of her Secret Sessions.

    17. And when a young fan was unable to attend her concert after being diagnosed with leukaemia, Taylor donated $50,000 to a GoFundMe page to help pay her medical bills.

    "To the beautiful and brave Naomi, I'm sorry you have to miss it, but there will always be more concerts," Taylor wrote in a message alongside her donation. "Let's focus on getting you feeling better. I'm sending the biggest hugs to you and your family."

    18. At the time, GoFundMe's donation limit was $15,000, meaning Taylor had to make four separate donations. As a result of her generosity, the website changed their donation limit policy.

    19. In August last year, Taylor countersued a man who sexually assaulted her for a symbolic $1 in order to serve as an example "to other women who may resist publicly reliving similar outrageous and humiliating acts."

    20. Quotations from her testimony at the trial went viral, and people praised her for being seriously badass.

    When asked if she could see the incident directly Swift said she couldnโ€™t see exactly because her โ€œass in the back of her body.โ€

    When she was asked if she felt guilty after the man lost his job, she replied: "Iโ€™m not going to let you or your client make me feel in any way that this is my fault. Here we are years later, and Iโ€™m being blamed for the unfortunate events of his life that are the product of his decisions โ€“ not mine."

    21. When Reputation was released in November 2017, Taylor became the only artist in history to release four consecutive albums that sold more than one million copies in their first week.

    22. Reputation also sold more than 700,000 copies in its first day โ€“ more than any other 2017 album had sold in its first week.

    23. Last year, Taylor made a surprise appearance on the Tonight Show to perform a song in tribute to Jimmy Fallon's mother, who had died the previous week.


    Mike DiCenzo, a writer and producer for the show, tweeted that Taylor wasn't scheduled to perform that day but said yes without hesitation. The lyrics of the song she performed โ€“ "New Year's Day" โ€“ had a special significance for Jimmy and his mother, and everyone on set cried when she sang it.

    24. And finally, she once bumped into a fan who was celebrating her birthday in Central Park and gave her $90 for a birthday meal at Chipotle.
