Here's Why This Photo Of Miley Cyrus' Mom Has Sparked A Huge Debate About White Privilege

"Every single person in jail right now for smoking pot should be released yesterday."

This is Miley Cyrus and her parents, Billy Ray and Tish.

A few days ago, Billy Ray posted this photo of his wife posing with a cupboard (or a safe?) filled with what can only be described as a whole bunch of weed.

Yes! Like I said yesterday @TishCyrus.... my how the times they are a changing #CrAzYMaMa

Tish did give her side of the story on Instagram, assuring commenters that the weed in the photo wasn't actually hers.

Now, their daughter Miley has been very open in the past about her penchant for smoking an awful lot of weed.

But, in December last year, Miley gave an interview and revealed her mom had got her back into smoking weed.

While recreational marijuana use was legalised in California — where the Cyruses live — in 2016, the photo of Tish has sparked a huge debate online about white privilege and the American justice system.

While black and brown folks are incarcerated for possessing a small bag of this. https://t.co/RJPW5Ev6Lg

Many people, including news anchor Soledad O'Brien, pointed out that plenty of people remain in prison on weed-related charges while privileged people like the Cyruses can be open about their marijuana use without consequence.

Think of all the people incarcerated right now on marijuana charges. And you wonder why so many people understand that criminal justice is often neither fair nor just. https://t.co/mKNpzxGEVk

Imagine getting outta jail after 30 years for selling weed than seeing this pic https://t.co/uNzlq4Zv0u

lmao my cousin been locked up since season 1 of Bojack for an ounce. https://t.co/2TWzgqAgFi

And several pointed out that people of colour are significantly more likely to face marijuana charges than white people.

FREE EVERY BLACK AND BROWN PERSON SITTING IN THE BOX FOR GOOFY WEED CHARGES https://t.co/7xUpvQ6glL

yall ever think abt how weed is something that only white ppl can commercialize and turn into a personality trait. people of color will get called druggies so fast..... https://t.co/hgrMJ4R8Pn

One person simply quoted Cynthia Nixon — who ran for New York City governor last year — to make their point.

"We have to stop putting people of color in jail for something that white people do with impunity,” - Cynthia Nixon on Marijuana use https://t.co/RJPW5Ev6Lg

And another pointed out that, even if those incarcerated on marijuana-related charges were released, the likelihood of their lives returning to normal afterwards would be slim.

Meanwhile millions of men and women are sitting in prison on this type of shit, and even though Tish has her goddamn weed chest of drawers all over social media, do you think those people will have any type of rights (voting, employment, housing) when they get released? GTFO https://t.co/op0WWc6MDx
