10 Euphoric Sad-Disco Songs You Need To Hear Immediately

    *ALL OF THE FEELS*

Sad-disco. The kind of music that's catchy as hell but still has intelligently written lyrics. The kind of music with a sense of euphoric melancholia that quite literally gives you ALL THE FEELS.

It's the best kind of pop music.

And there's plenty of it around at the moment. Invariably, the best comes from Sweden - after all, Robyn's seminal Dancing On My Own is the pinnacle of sad-disco. But pop musicians around the globe have been indulging their sad sides in 2014. Here's 10 of the best.

    1. La Roux - Let Me Down Gently

"But when you let me down gently, it still feels hard" singer Elly Jackson sighs on this, the standout track from her recently released album 'Trouble In Paradise'. At the centre of the song is a moment of epic silence where you can practically hear her heart tearing in two - it's one of the best moments in pop of the year so far.

Key lyric: "I hope it doesn't seem like I'm young foolish and green / Let me in for a minute, you're not my life but I want you in it".

    2. Tove Lo - Habits (Stay High)

Habits (Stay High) may have been doing the rounds on the radio recently, but the whole of Tove Lo's 'Truth Serum' EP is well worth a listen. It quite literally details the breakdown of a relationship, from the giddy joy of Paradise to the searing honesty of Out Of Mind, all wrapped up in a near perfect pop package.

Key lyric: "I gotta stay high all the time to keep you off my mind"

    3. Broods - Mother And Father

New Zealand brother-sister duo Broods may share Lorde's songwriter (Joel Little), but their sound is altogether dreamier and more wistful. On new single Mother And Father they contemplate the loneliness of life on the road away from family, amongst swirling synths and stomping beats.

Key lyric: "Ever since I left my mother it's much harder to know / how to make my own life here, how to make my own home".

    4. Indiana - Heart On Fire

British singer Indiana recently had a surprise hit with her track Solo Dancing, but Heart On Fire is a superior follow-up. With its upbeat dance production and melancholic lyrics, she's come close to out-Robyning Robyn - no mean feat.

Key lyric: "The first fall is the deepest, the deepest I know / And now I fall to pieces".

    5. Say Lou Lou - Beloved

Ok so technically the Australian-Swedish sisters released this last year, but with their debut album on its way in 2014 this track still deserves a mention. Yearning melodies, ethereal vocals and dreamy production makes their music hard to ignore, but Beloved is especially touching for its questioning lyrical content.

Key lyric: "We lie together but I feel so alone / And I give everything I have to you, why is it never enough?"

    6. Katy B - Crying For No Reason

This was a massive hit for London's Katy B earlier this year and for good reason. She's well known for her dance-pop crossover style, but on this track she finally found the raw emotion to match the beats and synths, her voice soaring like never before.

Key lyric: "'Cause I never faced all the pain I caused / Now the pain is hitting me full force".

    7. Lykke Li - Gunshot (Paul Thomas Saunders Remix)

Lykke Li is Sweden's reigning queen of dramatic sadness, as anyone who's listened to her recent break-up album 'I Never Learn' will tell you. Put a donk on her music, though, and the result is a sublime slice of sad-disco.

Key lyric: "My heart cracked, really loved you bad / Gun shot, I'll never get you back".

    8. Fender Heist (feat Monika May) - Move With The Sirens

Swedes aren't the only Scandinavians who excel at sad-disco. Norwegian production duo Fender Heist have teamed up with vocalist Monika May for this dreamy, synth heavy track. There's a real fragility to the vocals that contrasts beautifully with the upbeat production, like all the best pieces of sad-disco.

Key lyric: "I can go where the ocean forgets it's a sea / I can feel all the things that you left here for me".

    9. Röyksopp & Robyn - Do It Again

Because this list just wouldn't make sense without a track from Robyn. Taken from their collaborative EP of the same name, this might not be the saddest track on the list but the central lyric and utterly euphoric production perfectly encapsulates the essence of sad-disco.

Key lyric: "Don't care what they say, it hurts so good / I don't wanna stop, I know I should".

    10. Bright Light Bright Light - I Wish We Were Leaving

Yes the production is a sumptuous slice of EDM. Yes Elton John features. But it's the simplicity of the chorus lyric that really hits home on this track from UK artist Bright Light Bright Light. It also offers a different slant on the usual break-up songs that's just as heart-wrenching, but ultimately uplifting.

Key lyric: "One day you'll make somebody so happy, but it won't be me".
