6 Beers to try for the Six Nations In Edinburgh

At the Students Association, we are showing every match of the Six Nations Championship here at our Sports Bar and Pleasance Cafe here in Edinburgh and providing you with some awesome food and drinks while we are at it. For beer lovers - here are some tasting notes on the beers we have selected for you for each nation. Support your team in style.

Scotland – Stewart's Lager - Stewart Brewery

Stewart Brewing is brewed right here in Edinburgh. An independent, award-winning brewery, their beers have been a big part of the ever growing Scottish craft scene since 2004. Stewart's Lager has a zesty taste with a slight bitterness that you would expect from any good quality lager. We also have a VIP Deal on First World Problems, which not only kills with its funny can design, but mixes the tried and tested tradition of Belgian brewing with a new-age modern IPA craft twist. Fist World Problems is sweet, biscuit on the nose with a bittersweet aftertaste. Belgian IPA's are becoming ever more popular but be warned, this one has a kick at 6.2% ABV. Enjoy responsibly while supporting the home nation with a local brew.

England - Morland Old Speckled Hen

Craft beer may be taking the world by storm but sometimes there’s nothing more tasty and no nonsense than a good old fashioned real ale. First brewed in 1979 in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, this beer has toffee notes on the nose; and a caramel biscuit malt taste. This will appeal to the unpretentious, who may value taste over fancy design and labels. The prop forward of the beer world if you will.

Ireland – Guinness

Guinness – Guinness is as synonymous with Ireland as it is with Rugby. Especially now that they sponsor the 6 Nations. This iconic pint of 'the black stuff' practically goes hand in hand with watching the Rugby. Roasted malts provide a velvety smooth taste on the palate and there’s nothing more satisfying than getting past the waiting time from watching it settle. Often thought of as a hearty meal in itself, there will no doubt still be space for snacks. At just £3 a pint during every single 6 Nations match that’s screened live. It’s an absolute bargain!

Wales - CLWB Tropicana - Tiny Rebel Brewing

Tiny Rebel is another independent, award winning craft brewery from Newport, Wales that does some seriously exciting things to push the boundaries of beer. Tiny Rebel like to add some really interesting ingredients such as marshmallows, or pairing various hops for refreshing flavours. CLWB Tropicana is the latter. A refreshing India Pale Ale with hints of pineapple and mango. The perfect accompaniment to any Wales match.

France – Desperados

It may surprise you to hear that Desperados is in fact a French beer. The name, and added tequila, may lead you to believe this is a Mexican beer. It was actually first brewed in France by French brewing company Fischer Brewery. Now produced by Heineken, this modern take on 'lager and lime' with a tequila twist has proven popular for many years. At 5.9% ABV this might be one to enjoy sparingly, especially if you plan to last for Big Cheese on Saturday.

If you want to go full Mexican with your brew, we also have a VIP Deal on Corona. The favourite beer of those who want something refreshing with a minimum bitterness in the taste and an added slice of lime.

Italy: Peroni Nastro Azzurro

When we think of Italy, we think; fashion, scenic coastal views, amazing food, and a bottle Peroni. One of Italy’s favourite beers, Peroni is enjoyed for it’s refreshingly light taste and hint of grass. This is an easy drink beer that is somewhat session-able at 5% ABV. 'Nastro Azzuro' on the label stands for “Blue Ribbon” in Italian, and while it’s unlikely that the blue ribbons will be draping over the 6 Nations trophy this year, our Italian students can live in hope.
