The Electric City may seem like an unlikely place for a counter-culture of indie rock to be booming, but this tight knit music community has been building up to something great for the past 10+ years. Here are 10 essential Scranton bands that if you don't already know, you should.

Originally formed in Brooklyn, NY by life-long friends Nathan Andre (bass/vocals) & Drew Carsillo (guitar/vocals), EWW YABOO is a band located deep in the woods of Northeastern Pennsylvania. The band has spent their time crafting 11 songs for their second release through Summersteps Records titled ‘Keep Dreamin’, which will be available as a limited cassette/digital download in the Summer of 2014

2. A Fire With Friends

Progressive Indie Rock.

A Fire With Friends has an ear for musicality and dynamics in songs, but they have an even stronger focus on hooks and melody. The band has gone through various line up changes over the years, but has stuck to their guns, and constantly pushed forward. Their most recent release "Ghost House" sees the band in tip top shape. A Fire With Friends have done countless tours, released a total of three EPs and are currently working on their first full length record.

Born and raised in Scranton, Pennsylvania, singer-songwriter Patrick McGlynn writes songs that examine life, love, loss and dreams fueled by the times we live in. They have released two EPs, and are currently working on their next record. Blinded Passenger, aside from being a well oiled musical entity, are locally renowned for the storytelling in their songs.

4. Family Animals

Family Animals are a band consisting of Jesse Viola, Anthony Viola, and Frank DeSando. You can hear elements of indie, funk, classic rock, alternative, and melodic pop rock. They have released two EPs, and one full length record.

Down to Six are a three piece rock band. Their sound as a collective unit can often be very sweet and melodic, and at other times very harsh and abrasive. Down to Six have released two EPs and are currently demoing material for a full length record in the works.

A Social State is a four piece rock band. Their sound is a mix of sharp-edged rock but with a darker tinge. A Social State has released one EP, and one full length record. They are currently planning to release their second full length record which was produced by Steven Haigler. Steve has produced and mixed artists such as Brand New, The Pixies, Local H, and Fuel

7. Silhouette Lies

With influences from post-hardcore all the way to 90's alternative rock, Silhouette Lies are an intense and cohesive rock and roll unit. The band has released one self titled EP, and are currently working on new music.

Esta Coda has a sound that is a mix between bands like Jimmy Eat World and Alkaline Trio. They have just released their debut EP "Kindness" to a great local reception. It was recorded by producer Will Yip (Title Fight, Circa Survive) and mixed by Mike Watts (As Tall As Lions, As Cities Burn, The Dear Hunter)

9. Eye On Attraction

Eye on Attraction is comprised of Andrew Merkle, Joe Terry, Mike Trischetta, and Amber Sauls. Their sound is a blend between bands like Coheed and Cambria, Circa Survive, and Rush. They have released one full length album called "The Factory" which featured ex-singer Zach Graham, but are currently recording new material with new singer Amber Sauls.

We Were Templars are one of the newest editions to the local Scranton music scene. Their sound can be compared to bands like Foals, Circa Survive, and Balance and Composure. They have released two EPs, and are currently recording their third EP with new vocalist Zach Graham.
