12 Detroit Neighborhood Transformations Between 2007 And 2013

Detroit was once one of the fastest growing middle class cities in America. Today, it is a city plagued with poverty, crime, and one of the nations highest foreclosure rates. Since 2007, one in every three homes in Detroit has been foreclosed on, fifty six percent of those foreclosures are now considered blighted properties, and residency has dropped by almost 250,000 people. The current foreclosure crisis in Detroit can be directly linked to two factors: subprime lending practices of the early 2000’s and unreasonably high property tax rates set by the city. The following images show the transformation of various Detroit neighborhoods from quaint streets to blighted ghettos. As one can see from the drastic decline from 2007 to 2013, the foreclosure crisis in Detroit is an epidemic that must be resolved in order to transform it back to the flourishing great American city it once was.
