6. Tentacruel

You can dismiss this list from the get-go by remembering the thousands of Tentacool you pulverized while training, but I implore you to read on. Tentacruel, with a base special defense of 120 and a water-poison learnset, can be the scourge of the ocean with the proper training (meaning no poison sting bullshit). 'Cruel is resistant to a bunch of types, including ice, fire, steel, and fighting. Oh, and he's a giant squid beast. What's more intimidating than that?

5. Gengar

Similar to Alakazam, Gengar is equipped with insane special attack and speed, but also has the added benefit of being immune to normal, fighting, and ground moves. His defense is pretty abysmal, but he's the 10th fastest original Pokemon, and three of the Pokemon above him (Persian, Dugtrio, Tauros) are at a severe type disadvantage. All in all, a solid choice for any team.

4. Charizard

You knew Charizard was going to be on this list. You could feel it deep in your bones. In fact, you'd probably be upset if Char-char wasn't listed somewhere here. He can fly, he can breathe fire, he gives Ash the business. Not the best Pokemon at the start of the game, I'll give you that, but by the Elite Four this guy is a total BAMF. Every team needs a fire Pokemon, so why not go for the best? (And screw ice Pokemon.)

3. Alakazam

Simply put, psychic had an absurd advantage in Gen 1. As the games progressed, it seemed like types were being invented to make them less disgustingly powerful. What never changed was the authoritarian rule of Alakazam as King of Psychic Pokemon. With a base special attack and speed of 135 and 120, respectively, you don't usually need to worry about his pitiful defensive stats.

2. Jolteon

My almost religious focus on special attack and speed is probably getting tiring to some, but Jolteon also has solid special defense! On top of that, he is the fourth-fastest original behind Electrode, Aerodactyl, and Mewtwo. There are the normal drawbacks of weakness to rock and ground, but Jolteon is versatile and a good leadoff to any lineup.

1. Mewtwo

Because obviously. Mewtwo is practically unstoppable. I remember nearly pissing myself back when I saw Pokemon: The First Movie in theaters—he was THAT awesome. His movie power is representative of actual game power, where 'Two has the third-highest special attack of any Pokemon ever. His learnset is glorious, his other stats are obscene. Not to mention, if you use your master ball on anything besides Mewtwo, he's pretty hard to catch.
