    What Shapes Do You See?

This is much more than some dumb illusion.

    A circle? A hexagon?

Nah, more like a work of genius.

This is Pitopia, a circular city with the exact area of pi (3.14) miles. Despite the small land area, it is designed to accommodate more than 400,000 inhabitants.

From the top of the city, 8 shapes (4 circles and 4 hexagons) that can be seen constitute the 8 'neighborhoods' of the city. The 'neighborhoods' function as built-in communities of the city, each having a distinct architectural design and culture.

    Check out that skyline!

Dominic Nguyen, the city designer, says he came up with the idea when he noticed that any everyday object can appear as building. "I had the strangest revelation staring at my school materials in class one day. The binders, the pencils, the water bottles ... they looked like they could form a city," Dominic says.

    That's a lot of shapes...

The city is divided up by many circular layers, each having buildings of different heights. "To be honest, Shrek gave me the idea. Everything has layers: ogres, onions, even cities."

    Scared of heights?

Pitopia has many skyscrapers, one of which is a half of a mile tall! The tallest building is in the center of the city overlooking the 8 'neighborhoods.'

Giving a whole new meaning to 'driving in circles'

"Transportation was a bit of a struggle to handle in Pitopia. Instead of city blocks, Pitopia uses divided segments within the layers of the city."

Hmm, traffic is going to be really interesting...

But maybe, this isn't such a good idea...

    Feeling a bit claustrophobic?

Dominic states his concern about the future of sky-high cities. "All of these tall skyscrapers are going to block out the residents view of nature."

Will these inhabitants have any idea what the world is beyond the city? "It's a problem that has already arisen is some mega-cities and is going to quickly arise in other cities when the population of the world is growing at an unsustainable rate," Dominic cautions.

    Who cares! Ooh pretty...

I want to live there, don't you?

Yes, I wrote this article about myself in third person and it was awkward.
