10 Weird And Wonderful Durham Students' Union Student Groups

With almost 200 student groups consisting of societies, media groups, associations and DUCK - there's so much to get involved in at the Students' Union.

1. Northern Society

It's not a secret that Northerners are a bit of a minority at Durham University as a large majority of the students are from Surrey or beyond. This society celebrates everything northern discussing pressing issues such as Cooplands verses Greggs and whether Manchester is really in the North.

2. Pokemon Society

Pokemon Society celebrated the fun and frolics of the Nintendo phenomenon long before the emergence of Pokemon Go. From the 151 lovable characters, shiny Pokemon cards and countless episodes following Ash Ketchum and his friends, there are plenty of things that the Pokemon Society covers. If that wasn't enough, the Students' Union building is a PokeStop.

3. Chocolate Society

Whether it's white, dark, milk or hazelnut - everybody loves chocolate.

4. Quidditch Society

Our Quidditch team, Durhamstrang have played in the UK Quidditch Championship and erase any doubts that Durham University is the muggle version of Hogwarts. Quidditch is very much a contact sport. Brooms not provided.

5. Kink Society

Kink Society is a society aimed at all Durham University Students interested in BDSM, kink and fetish activities. It provides an educational space for members to meet and to explore kink in a friendly and relaxed setting, with an emphasis on consent and safety.

Enter Durholme, a city of tall towers, dark alleys, scoundrels, brigands, action, adventure, deceit, betrayal, romance, assassination, and perhaps a few nice guys too. Become a knight, beggar, thief, priest, wizard, bard… anything you can think of! You can play a hero, a villain, a misguided idealist or someone just trying to get by. The choice is totally up to you. Every week we run a tavern night, an adventure and a weapons practice.

7. Freefall Society

Ever wanted to jump out of a plane? One of the world’s most adrenaline-fuelled sports is available right here at Durham University Students' Union. DUFFC gives you the chance to train and become a fully qualified solo skydiver in an easy, safe and affordable way.

8. Champagne Society

Some Durham students love the finer things in life. The Durham University Champagne Society was set up in order to introduce students to the culture of champagne tasting. They offer tasting of many diverse and prestigious champagne houses including Tattinger, Laurent Perrier and A. Robert. They try to keep ticket prices as low as possible for students by buying direct from the growers. All students are welcome whether they are experts on champagne or have never tried it before.

9. Rock Society

Durham University Rock Society organizes regular events aimed for fans of Rock, Metal and Alternative music. These include DJ nights, trips to Newcastle rock bars/clubs, themed bar crawls and more. The society also promotes local and student bands, assists members who are interested in joining bands and holds open mic and gig nights every term.

10. DUCK

Not to be confused with fluffy animals - DUCK is Durham University Charity Kommittee who raised over £100,000 for charity last year. So if you want to sleep in the cathedral, race some ducks down the river or travel to Tanzania - get involved with DUCK!
