This Artist Paints Famous Masterpieces As Tattoos On Paintings Of Females

Agnieszka Nienartowicz was born in 1991 in Jelenia Góra, a small town in Lower Silesia, Poland. She studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, where in 2016 she received a Master of Fine Arts, at the painting studio led by Prof. Maciej Świeszewski with a supplement in drawing under Prof. Maria Targońska. In the years 2011-2013 she studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław. She was awarded several scholarships, a number of awards and distinctions. Her works are situated in collections in Poland, United States, Canada, Germany, Austria and Ireland. She is represented by RJD Gallery in New York.

ARTIST STATEMENT

A key element of some of the paintings are portions of other works from the past incorporated into them, whether in the form of a background, an attribute or as a composite element with the character themselves (even in the form of a painting on the subject’s body). The works I choose, though being mere objects, seem alive to me as they bear witness to the thoughts of their authors and the times in which they were created. By appropriating fragments of these works, I establish a kind of dialogue with their authors, transferring the inseparable thought behind those paintings to my own canvas. At the same time, placing them in a completely new context, I deprive them of their original meaning and transform them into an artifact. This ambiguity is what I love.
