Wild bananas have large, hard seeds [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Inside_a_wild-type_banana.jpg]. Every century or so the cloned (asexually propagated) commercial banana trees stop reproducing (or all get infected) and we have to switch to a different cultivar. The taste of bananas has been changing slightly as we switch from one cultivar to another. It is possible that we will run out of cultivars that can be grown commercially—then the banana will indeed disappear from most stores. This information is not widely known, but can be found [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panama_disease].
