In my digital travels yesterday, I encountered two separate comments that grabbed my attention for the same basic reason.
First, Kelly Ripa returned to Live! yesterday. If you haven't been paying attention, Kelly's co-star is moving on thanks to a bump up from the network. The problem is this didn't happen overnight. Nothing like that ever does. This is the result of planning and discussion.
What Michael does with Michael's career is Michael's business and what the network does with its talent is theirs, but Kelly's beef is that they blindsided her with the news.
She cried communication foul.
The other story that has been on my mind is a comment made by someone in Prince's entourage. Apparently, he died without a will. When asked why he had never bothered writing one and the answer was:
He didn't expect to die.
My immediate thought was: Of course he didn't. Who does...
Somewhere in these two stories is a conversation about humanity. Celebrities are bigger than life sometimes, so I forget they have some of the same problems as the rest of us.
Þ Ripa spoke about demanding respect in the workplace. That's a concept anyone can appreciate.
Þ Prince failed to realize he might die at a young age. That's a concept most of us also fail to grasp.
I get aggravated with people like Kim Kardashian or young Kyle Jenner, who market their bodies like a brand asset, but how much of that has to do with how they see themselves? Is low self-esteem behind all that sexual grandstanding?
No matter what your tax bracket, human problems control your thought process and decision making.
You can be small minded and say:
I wish I had their problems,
But maybe you already do. It's not about feeling sorry for anyone. It's about understanding the motives behind behavior to learn more about the world.
