The novel is set during the mid-1950s – 20 years after the events of To Kill a Mockingbird – and follows Scout as she returns to Maycomb from New York to visit her father, Atticus.

Once home she is forced to grapple with issues both personal and political as she tries to understand both her father's attitude toward society and her own feelings about the place where she was born and spent her childhood.

The publication has proved controversial among both industry figures and readers. Lee has been in poor health since a stroke in 2007, and many are worried she is not in a fit state of mind and is possibly being exploited.

Earlier this month, the state of Alabama investigated allegations of elder abuse against Lee, though they found no evidence of financial fraud.

According to a report in the New York Times, Lee appears to be mentally fit:

One person informed of the substance of the interviews, who did not want to speak for attribution because the inquiry was ongoing, said Ms. Lee appeared capable of understanding questions and provided cogent answers to investigators.
