My girlfriend Mia and I have traveled to hundreds of places together and after a while, I find myself saying, “How do I make our travels together more fun?” I have found the best way to travel is to immerse ourselves into the local culture and try to bring smiles to people’s faces. I have lived almost my whole life in an hour’s radius of New York City, and every year for over 30 years, I have visited the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center. I asked myself, “How do I make my trip to the Christmas tree different this year?”
I decided I was curious to know what it would be like to dress up as Santa Claus and visit the tree. My work colleagues tried to talk me out of it, as they thought it was an absurd and embarrassing idea. I disagreed with them and went to Party City and bought a Santa Claus outfit anyhow. I went all out and even bought the white gloves and glasses to go with it. When I drove into the City and picked up my girlfriend Mia up at work, we went out to dinner at Carmine’s on 44th street in Times Square and ate the red clam linguine pasta that we are addicted to. The restaurant was packed and there was over a 2 hour wait for a table. We ate at the bar as we usually do. I was going to tell Mia about my plan to dress up as Santa. I chickened out, as I was nervous to hear what she would say. I decided I would wait until we got to the car to tell her. We got back to the car and I showed her my Santa outfit and I told her how I wanted to dress up as Santa and walk around Rockefeller Center by the Christmas tree and take photos together. She didn’t say anything when I told her and her face was completely emotionless. She smiled and said, “Your Crazy!” She then paused and said, “Let’s do this!”
Before she could change her mind, I gave her the elf hat I bought for her and I put the Santa suit on in the middle of the street next to where our car was parked. One person who walked by said, “Isn’t it too early for that?” We then drove uptown 15 blocks north to Rockefeller Center with me in full Santa gear including beard, glasses and white gloves. When the NYPD police car pulled up next to us at the light on 42nd street and 6th avenue, I made sure not to make eye contact. We circled up to Central Park and drove down 5th avenue and passed all of the retail stores with their beautiful Christmas displays. As luck would have it, we found a free parking spot less than one block away from the tree on the corner of 47th Street and 5th avenue. In New York City parking terms, that is considered to be a modern miracle.
Before I got out of the car, I started to get really nervous and I said to Mia, “Maybe this is a bad idea.” She shouted in her cute Korean accent, “You paid $50 for this Santa suit! You are going if you like it or not!”
I hadn’t made it three steps out of the car when two young ladies came up and asked me to take a selfie with them. I immediately knew that my bright idea was going to pay off. Mia and I held hands and crossed the street together. I held her hand tightly because a few people had noticed me and were starting to say, “Hello Santa” or “Santa!” I could tell a couple people had Santa issues as they were saying “Santa” with a disgusting and disdained look on their faces. I never knew a grown adult could have Santa issues. Anyhow, Mia and I got to the tree and were just about to take a photo together when we noticed that the lights of the Christmas tree had just been turned off. We were really bummed out as we thought our night had just been ruined. Then Mia had to make things worse by saying, “I told you so! We should have come earlier!”
Before I could reply back to her comment that made absolutely no sense to me and frustrated me even more, a little girl ran up to me and hugged my legs. She grabbed on to my red Santa pants and said, “Santa, I love you.” Her timing couldn’t have been more perfect. Her parents looked on with amazement with a huge smile on their faces. I crouched down almost to the floor and gave her a big hug and said “Santa loves you too!” It was a beautiful moment. The young girl wouldn’t let go and we hugged for over a minute without saying a word. If you ever dress up as Santa and someone gives you a hug, don’t be the first person to let go.
