Peppa Pig to face the programming axe? Not on my watch, I'll tell ya' that for nothing.

Miss Rabbit from Peppa Pig - she is one empowered woman.

I was having my coffee this morning and listening to Radio National when I nearly choked on my java, and spat a stream of dark coloured liquid across the room.

Peppa Pig had come up in Senate Estimates as facing the possible axe.

"WHAAATTTTT!!!!!!!!", I screamed.

I literally couldn't believe it, that this wonderful show was even mentioned.

The background to this is that recently I began watching this show full time, as I wrote in my blog, which you can read here, if you wish.

I am working on a story about spray drift from pesticides, and important as that is, this is more so, so I downed tools and reconfigured to write about Peppa Pig.

Now the reason I like Peppa Pig is because it describes a childhood that was so sorely snatched from me as a boy.

My parents would rage around the house, I would hide under the bed.

Like the downtrodden in Les Miserables, I simply couldn't conceive of a world in which parents didn't scream purple faced hatred at their kids.

So for five minutes a day i would immerse myself in the world of the Pig family and enjoy their wholesome family fun, usually ending with them all splashing in some sort of mud, and then falling down laughing.

It's better than seeing the shrink, I can tell you.

Anyway, what's the problem?

Well it's all to do with the recent budget, and the Abbott government's wholesale war on those organisations that they see as standing in their way - the ABC first and foremost among these - and the easiest way to attack the ABC is to withdraw funding.

Now the shows they really want to attack are news and current affairs, these are the shows that the Abbott government most see as being consistently negative toward them.

However, since even they can't just say, "Stop attacking us" to ABC current affairs, they have to use the only weapon they have, funding.

And sadly Peppa could be collateral damage of this rapacious attack by the Abbott Government.

Mark Scott the managing director of the ABC has said that there were contracts in place for Peppa for the immediate future but down the track things were muddier.

Peppa and her family have massive appeal, - she garners half a million viewers a day for her two episodes, and has a staggering two million downloads a month on iView.

And this popularity adds to my enraged feelings about this.

Surely if the Abbott government want the ABC to be efficient, then they have to put on cheap programming with lots of viewers, just like a commercial network.

And so by any stretch of the imagination, Peppa is one of the greatest pieces of efficiency that the ABC has.

However, not all the Federal government are total f%^&-ing arseholes.

Malcolm Turnbull is (thankfully) a fan.

He said in a tweet that if there was any talk of Peppa being iced, then he would be the first in line to save her bacon (pun intended).

Well done Malcolm.

But if Malcolm is on board, there is one person who deserves to die - Piers Ackerman.

Ackerman, that fat, loathsome reptile made one of the most bizarre claims in the history of journ...., actually, I was going to say journalism, but Piers Ackerman is not a journalist.

He is a moronic hate-filled toad, who will be first against the wall when the revolution comes.

I wouldn't have thought it was possible that I could loathe and detest a person more than a member of the Abbott government, Malcolm excluded, but Piers Ackerman is that person.

In 2013 Ackerman crticised Peppa Pig for "pushing some weird feminist agenda".

I struggle to know where to start with this piece of bizarrity.

However, I'll have a go.

First, if any show is pushing a feminist agenda, then that's a good thing.

Women still earn less than men in this country and that is largely due to sexism.

As a race we have been fighting for years to remove barriers - glass ceilings for one - and give everyone equal rights.

Black, brown, cream, white, male, female, transgender, you name it, we should all be treated equally.

So leaving the noisome caverns of Piers's motives aside, does Peppa push a feminist agenda?

Short answer: no.

Everything she does, she does in the company of her brother George, and usually her parents.

They play sports together, they work in the garden together, nowhere does one sex have preference over the other.

When they go out in the car, mummy pig drives as often as daddy.

If the show is pushing any agenda it's equality.

And then we come to Miss Rabbit.

Here the idea that the Abbott government would attack this show, already in the looney tunes category moves into high farce.

She is just what they want.

Miss Rabbit runs two local businesses in the town, the china shop and the shoe store.

When they had the local fete, she was there doing face painting for the kids.

When the Pig family went bushwalking, (hiking for my north American readers), they came to a tiny store in the middle of the forest, and who was behind the counter serving tea and biscuits?

Miss Rabbit.

Furthermore she flies the local helicopter whenever its services are required.

This is one woman who is the cornerstone of the local economy, and thus just the sort of example that the Abbott government wishes to be set for Australia's children, both male and female.

Finally, if the kids like the show, their parents love it more.

Often the five minutes of Peppa allow parents to get a few things done that need concentration.

They know where their kids are while Peppa is on, and know they are watching wholesome non-violent entertainment with absorbed pleasure.

So, Tony Abbott, Piers Ackerman and you other inbred drooling morons of Canberra.

Hands off Peppa Pig, or you will be hearing the ominous thump of two million stamping feet as the children of Australia (with me and their parents supervising) march on Canberra and demand that Peppa Pig stays on our screens.
