EDO Petition Supporting Green Groups Right To Protest Overtook Pro-Mining Petition In 28 Hours

The Queensland Resources Council got it badly wrong when they asked people to sign their petition supporting Attorney-General George Brandis's changes to the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) act to strip communities of their democratic right to protest.

Slightly more than a day was all it took for Australians to sign the Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) petition supporting the rights of the community to challenge the government in court.

At 2.09pm, 28 hours after the petition went live, the EDO petition passed the Queensland Resources Council's (QRC) petition (see below) in number of signatures.

The QRC petition has been available to sign for two weeks, clearly indicating that very few people were that interested in supporting George Brandis's desire to reduce democracy in Australia.

Indeed the number of signatures on that petition, 1656 (at time of this update) is startlingly reminiscent of the number of people to be employed at Adani's Carmichael Coal Mine, which this furore all began with.

So we learn that, unsurprisingly, the only people really interested in supporting the QRC petition are those who want to work in the mine.

So it is a good sign for the protection of democracy in Australia that fifteen-fold more people signed the EDO petition.

Slow, or no, progress for pro-mining petition
