10 Reasons To Be Excited About 'The Librarians'

I can tell you right now, there is no show I am more excited about than TNT’s The Librarians. Think of Indiana Jones meets Supernatural meets a bottle of tequila, and you’ve got The Librarians. A group of genius and gifted misfits take on supernatural and mystical mysteries as magic seeps into the world. Based on the popular TNT movies, The Librarians picks up seven years after The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice left off. Flynn Carsen, played by Noah Wyle, has gone a bit batty dealing with everything by himself, and so a team is recruited to help him take on Earth's biggest challenge. The show starts on December 7th with a two hour premiere, but while you wait, here's ten reasons you should be very excited about The Librarians.

1. Rebecca Romijn is the brawn.

Eve Baird is a counter terrorism expert and is recruited to be Flynn Carsen's bodyguard. Talk about girl power! It's not ax-wielding Christian Kane who's the brawn in this show, it's Rebecca, and that is kickass in itself. She's the skeptic and the one in charge of these rag tag geniuses, and it's great to see.

2. John Larroquette!

Larroquette is a legend and that should be enough to get you to watch this show. He plays Jenkins, the grumpy psuedo-head of The Library.

3. Lindy Booth is a science prodigy with synesthesia

She smells breakfast when she thinks of science and sees numbers as colors. Cassandra has synesthesia and all her senses are crosswired in her brain. Not only with those with synesthesia get to see a character sharing their gift, we get a lot of amazing effects to see how her mind works. Plus it's always awesome to see a female genius on screen.

4. Christian Kane is back on our screens

Kaniacs everywhere are more than delighted that Christian Kane is back on television, and so should you be. He plays Jacob Stone, a lumberjack art historian. Yes, he's an art historian with an ax. It's great.

5. Noah Wyle is back as Flynn Carsen

For fans of the original movies, it would be impossible to imagine anyone else as The Librarian. Noah took red-eye flights to make sure he could film for the series in addition to his other show, Falling Skies. He's only in four episodes, but he's still there and being his usually Flynn Carsen-y self.

6. It's got an international cast

Korean-Australian John Kim plays rascally thief Ezekiel Jones (such a great name), and it's his first US gig! Delighted he got to use his native accent, we can expect delightful hijinks from this guy.

7. Everyone's a nerd.

And that's a GREAT thing! Being nerdy is becoming mainstream, what with the popularity of conventions and comic book movies, but it's still refreshing to see characters being unapologetically nerdy on screen and not being made fun of for it, but celebrated. Every member of The Librarians was chosen because of their specializations, be it history or science. Fellow nerds everywhere rejoice.

8. DRAGONS!

The preview at NYCC showed this very dragon, a Minotaur, and Tesla’s Death Ray. Favorite episodes from some of the cast include one about fairy tales, as well as the Christmas episode with Bruce Campbell as Santa Claus. There’s no stone that is going to be left unturned in terms of mythology that The Librarians will encounter.

9. There's magic!

The whole premise of The Librarians is that magic has started to seep into the world and The Library needs a team more than just Flynn Carsen to contain it. So expect a lot of magic and The Librarians possibly not really knowing how to deal with it.

Writer John Rogers expands on that: “The Librarians is a pulp show. It very much reflects an Indiana Jones, pulp sensibility..[y]ou’re going to see a lot of supernatural mysteries, a lot of magic mysteries…[y]ou know we really tried to make sure it felt like a good solid mystery each time that there was something to uncover.” [x]

10. It's going to be intentionally silly and fun.

Non-stop adventure, action, and hijinks with a heavy dose of humor. Everyone, cast and crew alike has been very sure to mention the humor in The Librarians. It’s not a serious show, it’s a light show, and that’s a welcomed thing to see with so many programs falling into the trick of being dark and gritty without any real motive. That being said, of course there will be some drama and angst, mostly focusing on the new recruits, whose journey the audience will be a part of.

The Librarians premieres on TNT on December 7th.
