Mom: Did you watch Miss USA?
Me: No I don't care. Do you?
Mom: She's black.
Me: That's so great!
I am the most contradictory person. To quote Tyler the Creator, "I'm a (expletive) walking paradox, no I'm not." I have never watched a full season of Miss USA. Is it considered a season? Is it a reality competition? The hell if I know. The pageant is hard for me to enjoy because of it's conventionality and deification of beauty. I have more stakes in the winner of MTV's The Challenge or in the slew of contestants on the Celebrity Name Game. However, Deshauna Barber's win shook me out of my apathy. In a country which undervalues black women's race and gender it is perversely pleasurable to see both recognized in the most shallow of terms. In fact I consider it to be one great underdog story and I will always root for the underdog. By the transitive property, this means I will always root for myself.
Here's to self-love. Here's to bless Miss USA!
