What’s it About – Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book is the inspiration for the Disney Animation movie of the same name. The story is about Mowgli, an Indian boy raised by wolves. When his family realizes the potential threat to his life by Shere Khan (a fierce tiger!), they try to send him to a nearby “man” village. On the road, he meets all sorts of animals and learns more about who he is and what life is like.

2. CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS

What’s it About – Written by Judi Barrett, this children's book is not only a blockbuster movie but is also on the list of Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children. The film adaptation follows the story of Flint who is an avid fan of the science of discovery. Among a slew of his inventions is one machine that turns water into food, changing the popular sardine hub into a food lovers paradise. While churning out pancakes, gummy bears and pizza, something goes wrong and it’s up to Flint and his friends to save the day.

3. HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON

What’s it About – How to Train your Dragon is a 12-part easy-to-read series by Cressida Cowell. The books and the movie are set in a Viking island called Berk. The protagonist is a skinny boy called Hiccup who, because of his difference in tastes and personality, is considered a misfit. In an attempt to fit in, Hiccup tries to capture an elusive dragon but ends up befriending the “monster”. The story follows their adventure as they try to break stereotypes and build a world where dragons and Vikings co-exist.

4. FANTASTIC MR. FOX

What’s it About – Roald Dahl has written quite a few children’s classics that have been famous as paperbacks and as movies. This one is my favorite. The story is about a former thief, Mr. Fox, who wants to go on one final project before settling down to the role of dad and husband. The raid will be his biggest yet when, with the help of his friends and family, he tries to outfox three notorious farmers.

5. HORTON HEARS A WHO

What’s it About – Dr. Seuss is everyone’s recommended children’s read. Not only does he spin a story with immensely memorable characters, he follows them up with life lessons every kid should learn. Horton hears a Who is a story about a whacky elephant who can hear a whole community of Who’s that live on a dandelion. He tries to save them from certain doom but his own friends and community don’t believe the Who’s exist. This delightful adventure is a must read and a must watch if only for their most famous quote – “A person is a person, no matter how small.”
