What It's Like To Be Friends With Emerging Artists

    "It's an immersive experience."

When you meet to have drinks at a bar, they'll almost immediately launch into a discussion about their latest project.

You only have so much time before they extend an invitation.

Your internal monologue is screaming at you.

    You even practice you're response.

But a few drinks and a guilty conscience later, you've purchased tickets to opening night.

When opening night comes, you realize you have no idea where the theatre is.

That's because it's site specific and takes place mostly in your mind.

You start to worry when they make you sign a waiver before entering.

But there's no real reason to worry—what's three hours without an intermission?

    And then it starts.

You quickly realize the majority of your time will be spent avoiding audience participation.

And making sense of the plot.

    But it's "post-modern," so there isn't one.

Around hour two, you give up.

And try to enjoy yourself as best you can.

Cause after all, it will be over and you will survive.

And when they ask you for your thoughts, you'll be honest.

And you'll feel good, because you supported them and their passions.

After all, everyone has to start somewhere and next time you're doing YOUR new show—you know who to call.
