Club Getaway is all about re experiencing those carefree summer days complete with trying new things, meeting new people, and finding a sense of inner happiness and camaraderie that you may have forgotten that you had. A weekend spent on 300 acres of land and lake, will surely give you your fill of sports, action and adventure, both on land and lake.
It’s a Friday afternoon and you’re either eager to get out of the city or just eager to leave work and head to the NYC bus departure site. Upon arrival, you’re greeted by the Crew with the most lively, cheerful and refreshing personalities. The crew will introduce themselves, check you onto the bus, take your bags and help you find a great seat on the bus.
Getting on the bus and driving out of the city, nostalgia will set in appealing to the inner child in all of us. Five minutes on the bus, and you’ll already be making new friends and chit-chatting away on how you heard about Club Getaway. What defines an adult camp can be somewhat different from singalongs and roasting marshmallows (even though we love our s’mores.)
“Hey guys! My name is Chelsea and I’ll be one of your crew members on the bus. We have some wine and some music to get us to Club Getaway. Say hi to Jimmy, he’s our bus driver.”
Everyone on the bus: “Hiiii Jimmy!”
Bus Driver: “Hi guys, my name is actually Billy.”
The bus erupts into laughter. This is the only bus ride you won’t want to fall asleep on, the wine seems endless as well as the laughter and the cheering as we pass the town of Kent and drive up into Club Getaway where the bus stops at the Tree Bench.
Camp days may have seemed like a distant memory, but that first step off the bus allows you to relive them. Greeted by more of the crew and some more adult campers who drove up for the weekend, a crew member will grab your bags and help you get to your Cabin while telling you more about dinner and the activities for the following day along with a schedule and some things you need to know.
Once you drop your bags off, you can head over to the tent where Bluto, the human mascot / Director of Entertainment for Club Getaway is dressed up and cheering us on to hit a piñata telling us that’s where our dinner is hidden.
Just a few steps away, there was a pop-up bar, people introducing themselves and hugging like they’ve known each other forever. Once you make it into the dinner area, you’ll be greeted by your choice of red or white wine with dinner, more people and more introductions with people from all walks of life interestingly getting along like the oldest of pals. You begin with one of the most amazing salads you’ll ever have as an appetizer and end with some great dinner to follow. Sitting next to me was an energetic and lively woman, had to be in her late 40’s raving about her 11 year-old daughter who was away at gymnastics camp to my boyfriend and I. She said she just needed to get away and have a camp experience of her own. There were two other women in their 40’s, one had already been to Club Getaway and the other a first timer. Then, a group of four guys joined our table in their late 20’s and after dinner we all ended up walking to the Boat House together for more talking, dancing and a few drinks.
People headed back to their cabins to get some sleep for an early Saturday morning and some just hung out outside their cabins star-gazing in awe from being away from those city skyscrapers, getting to know their new roommates and neighbors.
Saturday morning = a great breakfast buffet. There was literally a set up for everything. You can build your own omelet, make the best bagel with delicious spreads, grab some scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, take your pick of a mini-waffle or mini-pancake, pick up fruit, cereal and so MUCH MORE!
And right after breakfast there’s just something about a morning stretch overlooking the gleaming sun on the lake. It was serenity at its finest. Right before the morning stretch was over Bluto made his way through the stretching group with the Club Getaway flag filled with laughs and people still stretching while Bluto recited a Club Getaway pledge! What an awesome way to start the day. The flag was raised and the cheering commenced. You can tell everyone left their work phones and checking up on emails in the past. Everyone was checking in with each other seeing what activities they could do together and motivating others to try new things. Some headed down to the lake to enjoy a refreshing swim, canoe or water ski while others went hiking, bike riding and walking to the town of Kent.
My boyfriend and I joined a few others to walk to the town of Kent, which was led by Lisa, the awesome crew member. Once we got to the town of Kent we got to check out a few art galleries in the area, had awesome ice cream at Annie Bananie’s and got to know each other a lot more on the walk back to Club Getaway. Once we walked back onto Club Getaway grounds people were trying out the trapeze, cheering each other on and getting geared up for zip-lining. And guess what? There wasn’t a cell phone in sight! Everyone was interacting with each other, sharing their new experiences and having too much fun to reply from that Friday night email they received from work. Participating in new activities, developing new skills, and cultivating new friendships is the Club Getaway M.O.

Just as we were getting hungry, it was time for a FEAST, or as Club Getaway simply calls it…Lunch. Everything you could possibly think of for a great lunch during such an active Saturday afternoon was under one huge tent. As you walked in your eyes would light up, especially after hearing everyone rave about the dessert table. Having lunch was an experience within itself, from choosing what to eat to choosing which friends you wanted to sit with most.
From lunch many of us headed down to the lake to sit and relax and really take things in, sharing stories and playing card games. Then the real fun began! With no phones, this group of people felt like a mini tribe and with the bandannas handed out at lunch it turned into a color war!
After the white team won, a jump in the lake was one of the most refreshing things to do while the sun was shining. Some jumped off the iceberg mountain and water trampoline while others went canoeing and kayaking for the first time. Canoeing was a workout! We relaxed lakeside as many tried out the slip-n-slide and someone talked Bluto into a slip-n-slide race in his coconut bra and grass skirt.
And it was now almost dinner time. Back to the cabins we headed to shower & get ready for dinner. Dinner was excellent! This weekend’s party theme, Saint and Sinners brought out such. The saints in all white mingled amongst other saints and some angels even dared to sit with those with horns. A spectacle to say the least. Dinner was filled with picture taking, exchanging Facebook information, phone numbers and business cards to meet up when we got back to the city some time. Hugging and sharing laughs like we’ve known each other from the past. Excited for the party, some drinks and dancing, we headed down to the Boathouse where we laughed, danced and worked up an appetite for midnight s’mores.
A little wet and chilly, the fire pit took a bit long to get going giving people a chance to mingle with other people they hadn’t had the chance to talk with yet under the starry sky. The conversations warmed the place, the fire got started and the s’mores were the perfect thing to end Saturday night.
Some slept in a little later Sunday morning while others woke up early for a morning stretch and breakfast. Talks about the night before and still meeting new people to go on activities and adventures with took place during breakfast. More zip-lining, rock climbing, and archery. Then things got a little wet. But not to worry, there was also a schedule for things to do in the rain. From arts and crafts, to Salsa lessons, yoga, cards against humanity in the Boathouse and so much more. The sun came back out to play and so did we! It was now 3PM and people were packing up to go. With a mix of emotions we headed to the tree bench where the bus dropped us off. People hugged, took more pictures together and made sure to exchange information.
There was an authentic kind of connectedness the entire weekend. With new people and new skills, Club Getaway left us feeling like inspired kids again, but better!
