AubRih: Drake And Rihanna's Love Story In One Playlist

Aubrey and Robyn's love story as told through a curated Spotify playlist

After Sunday's 2016 MTV VMAs Drizzy and RiRi had me wondering... how would the AubRih love story be told through songs? Sleuths have determined that Rihanna may not have actually curved Drake after all and the world may finally be at peace. The two award-winning artists have been giving us hints to their extensive relationship timeline this whole time... or it could be an elaborate publicity stunt to boost album sales.

Either way, here is a curated Spotify playlist, "Aubrih: A Love Story," with explanations for each song. It's like they were just asking for someone to make one.

Feel free to follow the playlist. Enjoy!

    1. Pon de Replay

Here we are... the beginning of our long musical journey. When Drake finally made it to the VMAs Sunday night and presented Rihanna with her Michael Jackson Vanguard Award, he described meeting "Robyn" (Rihanna's real name) for the first time, "The first time I met Robyn Fenty was 2005. She was shooting a music video at a restaurant called Avocado in Toronto called 'Pon de Replay' and the director of the video was lil x."

I wonder if they danced to the upbeat club song together as well...

    2. Fireworks

Fast forward five years to May 2010 when Drake's song "Fireworks" was leaked ahead of his album Thank Me Later where he addressed his speculated 2009 first-date with Rihanna at Lucky Strikes,

"I could tell it wasn’t love, I just thought you’d f-ck with me / who could’ve predicted Lucky Strikes would have you stuck with me? / What happened between us that night it always seems to trouble me / Now all of a sudden these gossip sites wanna cover me / and you making it seem like it happened that way because of me / but I was curious and I never forget it, baby, what an experience / you could’ve been the one, but it wasn’t that serious."

    3. What's My Name?

A little over a year later, in October 2010, Rihanna released "What's My Name." She collaborated with none other than... Drake. The catchy pop lyrics outline a flirtatious fling between two people, and by the looks of the "What's My Name" music video their "friendship" led to somewhere steamy...

    4. Birthday Cake

In 2011, Rihanna released "Birthday Cake" as an interlude on her sixth album Talk That Talk after it was leaked online. On her birthday she released the "Birthday Cake" remix featuring artist and former boyfriend Chris Brown.

This is an important song to note. At the time of the release of "Birthday Cake" Rihanna and Chris Brown were not officially back together, and possibly the song release (and it's very sexy lyrics) were a cause of inspiration for Drake's lyrics in Rick Ross' 2011 track "Made Men."

Drake mentioned Rihanna outright rapping, "one of my baddest women ever, I call her Rihanna / But that’s cause her name is Rihanna."

(Note: Unfortunately this song isn't on Spotify so it didn't make it to the ~official~ AubRhi Spotify playlist)

    5. Take Care

And they're back at it with the collabs. In one of their most electric collaborations IMHO, Drake and Rihanna sweetly sung about a complicated love in their November 2011 song "Take Care."

The music video for the song featured some obvious chemistry, and Drake and Rihanna performed the song live in Paris.

    6. Stay

I know what you're thinking, yes, we're all pretty certain "Stay" isn't about Drake. However, two years after Rihanna released her 2012 track "Stay," Drake released "Days in the East" in 2014, which sampled background lyrics from Rihanna's "Stay."

    Days In The East

Drake rapped in his 2014 release,

"Remember one night I went to Erykah Badu house, she made tea for me / We talked about love and what life could really be for me / She said, “when that sh-t is real, you just know” / And I was thinkin’ ’bout you, you already know." Who do you think he was talking about here?

(Note: Unfortunately this song isn't on Spotify either, so it didn't make it to the ~official~ list either)

    7. Work

Jump to January 2016, when Rihanna released her album Anti, and the song of the winter "Work" featured Drake and their intoxicating chemistry. The upbeat dance-hall music video sealed the deal for everyone shipping their love, too

    8. Love On The Brain

    embed.spotify.com

The name of this track speaks for itself. RiRi had love on the brain... quite possibly about Drizzy. It's a powerful track that showcases Rihanna's vocal diversity.

    9. Higher

    embed.spotify.com

In this short but beautiful track Rihanna sang,

"You take me higher, higher than I've ever been, babe / Just come over, let's pour a drink, babe / I hope I ain't calling you too late, too late / You light my fire / Let's stay up late and smoke a J / I wanna go back to the old way"

"Higher" could be about many different people, but I'd like to think it was a message to Drake.

    10. Hype

    embed.spotify.com

Only a couple months later in April 2016 Drake released his fourth studio album VIEWS which garnered his first single. In "Hype" Drizzy casually mentioned Rihanna,

"Chasing women a distraction / They want be on TV right next to me / You cannot be here right next to me / Don't you see Riri right next to me?"

    11. Redemption

    embed.spotify.com

*Sigh* This. Song. Drake. So many feelings.

    12. Controlla

    embed.spotify.com

In one of the most popular tracks on VIEWS Drake rapped about his commitment to someone... that someone could be Rihanna. The song had a similar vibe to "Work," if you see where I'm going.

    13. Too Good

    embed.spotify.com

Drake's newest single from VIEWS is "Too Good" featuring Rihanna, where they rap about the ups-and-downs of a committed relationship.

We ship you, AubRih. Keep making music so this playlist can live forever.
