1. Bermagui

Distance from Sydney: Five and a half hours.

Bermagui, also known as Bermi by the locals, is famous for Horseshoe Bay and its blue pool. Dive into these still waters and you'll feel like you're swimming on the edge of the world. Add in some fish and chips, a beer or two and you've just about got a perfect spring afternoon.

2. Gerroa

Distance from Sydney: Just over two hours.

Drive down the winding highway for a relaxing day in Gerroa and dig your toes into the sand of Seven Mile Beach. If you want to expand your skillset, there are surf camps based in town. Or if that's not your style, you can simply frolic to your heart's content. You'll get the best of both: Country living and beach town life.

3. Tilba

Distance from Sydney: Just over five hours.

Tilba is a small town filled with souvenir shops, handmade products and a lolly shop that you can gorge yourself on. A little further along in Tilba Tilba is the starting point of the hike up Mount Gulaga, a mountain of significant cultural importance to the Yuin people. When walking up, make sure to stick to the paths that have been laid out.

4. Jervis Bay

Distance from Sydney: Three hours.

Jervis Bay is famous for its incredibly clear water, so you can't not go swimming. While you're there, it's worth exploring all the towns in the bay. From historic lighthouses at Point Perpendicular to the white sand of Hyam's Beach, Jervis Bay is the kind of place where you sleep late, do little and eat lots.

5. Huskisson

If you only have time to explore one town in Jervis, choose Huskisson. Book yourself onto a wildlife cruise, or if you time it right, a whale watching tour. If you've got some cash to spare, try snorkeling and diving around the marine park and enjoy the world underwater.

Merimbula is a perfect relaxation haven. If you want to explore, head to the 6km Main Beach and enjoy a long walk watching the tide. You can also visit Merimbula Aquarium and try and spot the fish you already know. Finish off the day by sitting on the beach with a drink in hand while you watch the sun go down. It's the best way to spend an afternoon.

Kiama is a quick day trip away from Sydney and is a great choice if you're a little strapped for cash or time. Check out their famous blowholes or take a dip in the crystal clear waters. For an extra cute option, pack a picnic so you can lunch and lounge in the sun.

Mogo may only be one small street but it's a fantastic pit stop for you to grab a coffee in a quaint café . Besides, it's also home to, the Mogo Zoo, which has giraffes, southern white rhinos and zebras.

With a winery nearby, Gerringong has it all: Secluded beaches, great food and spectacular views over the headlands. It's the perfect place to catch your breath.

Located at the base of the Clyde River is Batemans Bay. It's small enough that you'll enjoy coastal town vibes, but big enough that it still has a Macca's. While you're there, try your hand at kayaking or canoeing. And if you love to fish, there are also some sweet fishing spots to visit.

Sitting just north of the Victorian border is Eden. With multiple lookouts around the town and stunning views of breaching whales in the migration season, Eden will make you feel like you're on a mini holiday.

Tathra is an old coastal town that boasts a heritage-listed hotel and wharf. While it's a great place for you to relax, you can also head out on hikes, kayak on the river and explore some caves in surrounding locations.
