The Pros (and Cons) Of College

So you got in, now what?

Pro: The TV

I highly recommend purchasing a TV, because you no longer have to hide the remote when leaving the room so your siblings can't change the channel. You can finally take a restroom break, or grab a snack without having to run and stress about loosing your spot of being president of the TV.

Con: You are Poor

You know that little job that you had in high school that you really didn't care if you got paid or not, well now you can no longer afford to work for free. Some parents might pay for your tuition and books, but what about everything else? It is a rude awakening when you discover that the food in your pantry doesn't just magically appear, but its actually paid for. That being said...

Pro: Food

You are finally in charge of what you want to make and eat. Going grocery shopping with your mom or dad is difficult because they are always giving their opinions on what you are adding to the cart. But with your new found freedom off at college, you get to eat whatever the hell you want and don't have to worry about being judged for bingeing out on all the best junk food. (They don't call it "Freshman 15" for nothing.)

Con: Classes

Gone are the days your teachers stopped to answer questions and printed you out study guides for your final. Professors move fast and if you are in a lecture hall, good luck figuring out what the professor is talking about. When the test comes around, the only advice I can give is, read the book and pray it is multiple choice. Also, group projects get worse (I know, it didn't seem possible). If you are lucky, you get a genius in your group that knows everything about the topic, but if your group is anything like you, you'll spend your class meeting time assuming what things are and what they mean.

Pro: Food

Yes, I am repeating myself, because being in complete control of everything you eat is quit exciting. Whether you want Chipotle for dinner or a pint of Ben and Jerrys, the only person you have to ask is yourself and you don't have to worry about what everyone else wants for dinner.

Con: Friends

Going away for college, and realizing you don't have any familiar faces around you can be one of the hardest parts. For the most part, the friends you had in high school have been your friends since elementary/middle school, so now you have to try and remember how to make friends with new people, if only the college bookstore sold "Making College Friends 101". In college, making friends is completely different than back in high school. The best way to make friends is join a sorority/fraternity, join clubs, or live on campus.

Pro: Friends

Yes, friends is both a pro and a con. Once you realize everyone is in the same boat as you (nobody has friends yet), it is easy to go mingle and make friends. Often times, you find someone from your major who is more like you than some of your best friends from high school, and it is exciting to have this new found friendship.

Con: Reality Sets In

All throughout high school you couldn't wait for the idea of independence, even though your parents told you that all that responsibility can sometimes...suck. Yes it is fun being in charge of your life, but now you are responsible for so many things and sometimes it can get a little overwhelming. (But you will survive.)

Pro: Bragging Rights

I figured I should finish off on a positive note which is the best pro about college, and no it is not food. Now, when you go back home for holiday breaks and weekends you can brag to everyone about how smart you are. It doesn't even have to be a hundred percent true. All you have to do is remember some important facts from class and throw those into any conversation and show how smart and how much of an adult you are.
