1. You forget that your server is a human being

The correct answer to, "Hi, how are you today?" is not, "Coffee." Your server wants you to have an enjoyable dining experience - don't make it more difficult for them by being an asshole. Say please and thank you, acknowledge your server when they speak to you, and understand that nobody is perfect and sometimes mistakes happen.

2. Your children are out of control

There is nothing more frustrating than trying to navigate a table carrying a tray loaded with drinks when there are children running around underfoot. It's also somewhat infuriating when your kid is screaming/throwing things/making a huge mess and you ignore it. We understand it can be difficult sometimes, but if you're not even going to try, don't bring your kid to a restaurant.

3. You tip badly (or worse, not at all)

You probably know that in most jurisdictions, restaurants don't have to pay their servers minimum wage. What you may not know is that most restaurants also have a tip-out policy. This means that servers must pay a set amount of every bill (usually about 5%) back to the kitchen and hosts, so if you tip less than the tip-out amount, we're actually paying to serve you. If there's a problem with the food or service, tell someone so we can fix it for you.

4. You make up a ridiculous half-assed dietary restriction

If you have a genuine allergy or sensitivity, by all means, feel free to protect yourself. But when you claim to have a tomato allergy and then ask me to bring ketchup when your food comes out, you've just made everyone jump through hoops to prevent contaminating your food for no reason.

5. You think all servers are the same person

Each server has a section that they're responsible for. If you flag down a server that just happens to be walking by your table and ask for another drink or what the holdup is with your food, chances are she has no idea what you're drinking or why you're waiting, and now she has to go out of her way to find out whose section you're in, find that server, and let them know what you want, leaving her own tables waiting for whatever she was in the middle of when you grabbed her attention.
