Cornbread in ice cream, wild times we're living in!

Recently, Salt & Straw announced their THANKSGIVING ICE CREAM menu, which includes some wildly interesting flavors: Caramelized Turkey and Cranberry Sauce, Pumpkin & Gingersnap Pie, Mom's Mango Pie, Roasted Peach & Sage Cornbread Stuffing, and Parker House Rolls w/ Salted Buttercream.

Naturally, we decided we needed to test these out to see what these uniquely sweet and savory flavors were like.

CHRIS: For some reason I was surprised, but it's exactly as advertised. I tasted butter, cream, and sweet bread chunks. I was into the chewy chunks (which were liberally submerged throughout) more than the ice cream itself, but I think that's because its flavor reminded me of what I'd imagine it's like to straight-up scoop a spoon into a tub of margarine and eat it. Surely it's a more subtle butter than that, but just know they really deliver on the name!

KRISTA: Sorry Salt & Straw but I may as well have been eating a tub of straight butter. The butter flavor was overpowering and the little "chunks" of rolls just tasted like chewy butter. It was too too much for me! BUTTER LUCK NEXT TIME.

Roasted Peach & Sage Cornbread Stuffing

CHRIS: I was impressed by how peachy this was — they do not short you on the fruit! It had heavy cobbler vibes, except instead of a classic crust there was cornbread stuffing chunks that have a prominent taste. It might've been the most unique option of them all, and I respect it for that! I think this is a perfect ice cream to go in-store and try a small sample spoonful of, or maybe even a single scoop, before inevitably going all-in on a more trusty classic — sup, chocolate chip cookie dough?

KRISTA: Look, I love both these flavors — individually. As Chris said, the peach cobbler flavor was great, but then the cornbread stuffing that came into the mix just didn't sit right on my tastebuds. In all fairness, it very accurately delivered the flavors it was supposed to. They get points for that, but as far as my personal opinion, the flavor combo is not something I would enjoy as a standalone treat.

Mom's Mango Pie

CHRIS: I love mango so I'm biased, but I was very into this one. Once again, they freakin' deliver with an aggressive (in a good way) mango taste, and no shortage of pie crust-esque chunks throughout. I'm glad I got to taste it and happy that mango got some time in the spotlight, though I can't imagine how stupidly good the pumpkin pie flavor will be. I'd imagine pecan would also be a banger. Not hinting, not suggesting, just asking — what if?

KRISTA: I am technically allergic to mango but I still went in knowing the consequences — for science of course. And? It's a mango ice cream through and through. I like that the flavor didn't feel "fake" and I appreciate the creaminess. Pie chunks just make everything better so if you really like mango I think you'll appreciate this one.

Pumpkin & Gingersnap Pie

CHRIS: Of all the flavors, this is certainly the most normal-tasting one, and by "normal," I just mean pumpkin pie is an actual sweet dessert, so it's fitting as an ice cream. It reminded me of a seasonal Trader Joe's option, only high-end because the ice cream quality is next-level.

KRISTA: I don't want to sound basic, but this one was fantastic. You don't always need wild flavor combos to have a home run. Pumpkin and ginger are a great combo and throwing in the pie pieces made it that much better. Definitely a win!

Caramelized Turkey & Cranberry Sauce

CHRIS: This is a WILD one but I love it! It's surprisingly rich, and the pieces of turkey being covered in caramel have a really nice crunch to it if you're team mouthfeel. It's also sort of chewy when the caramel is gone and you're left with the lil piece of turkey, which is...unusual, but I was intrigued by it. The cranberry sauce aspect was fantastic, and I actually think this is evidence that we need MORE SWEET AND SAVORY ICE CREAMS.

KRISTA: Just....no. And I say this as a person who enjoys potato chips in vanilla ice cream. So, it's not just me saying I don't like salty, savory, and sweet. A turkey does not belong in an ice cream and this proves it. The flavors are too confusing and turkey as a sweetened cream haunts me.
