10 Things Riding Mass Transit Teaches You About Life

In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and your train leaving the station right before you get there.

    1. No rejection can make you feel as horrible as one from a subway turnstile.

    2. If an opportunity (such as an empty seat) seems too good to be true, it probably is.

    3. There are no strangers, only fellow humans desperately trying not to make eye contact.

    4. Invariably, you will run into tourists whose naive excitement both annoys you and saddens you, as you remember the joy you were once capable of feeling.

    5. But then you'll see 3 more guys manspreading and you'll feel validated in your general cynicism.

    6. The best things in life are worth waiting for, while average things, like a bus on a rainy day, are not but will make you wait anyway.

    7. Time is relative. So is the phrase "being held momentarily by the train dispatcher."

    8. We're all chasing our own white whales. For some of us, it just happens to be a late-night F train.

    9. No amount of pride looks as good as sitting feels.

    10. Sometimes life offers you an easy button. Sometimes that button is labeled "Uber".
