Was Jesus A Feminist?

"When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” John 2:3-4 ESV

Who prompted Jesus to perform his first miracle?

"These women were Mary, also called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out; Joanna, whose husband Chusa was Herod’s administrator; Susanna; and many other women. They provided financial support for Jesus and his disciples." Luke 8:2-3 ESV

MULTIPLE WOMEN! Jesus was not emasculated by the wealth and power of women.

Who provided financially for the ministry of Jesus?

"Taking the child by the hand, He said to her, “Talitha kum!” (which translated means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”)." Mark 5:41 NASB

The daughter of Jairus. This is a big deal since as a religious teacher Jesus was not supposed to touch anything that had died.

Of the 3 people Jesus raised from the dead, who is the only one that he physically touched?

"Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. She had a sister called Mary, who was seated at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word. But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me.” But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:38-42 NASB

Who did Jesus tell to leave the kitchen and to start learning?

“Woman,” Jesus said to her, “why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?”  
Supposing He was the gardener, she replied, “Sir, if you’ve removed Him, tell me where you’ve put Him, and I will take Him away.”  
 Jesus said, “Mary.”  
Turning around, she said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!”—which means “Teacher.”  
“Don’t cling to Me,” Jesus told her, “for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to My brothers and tell them that I am ascending to My Father and your Father—to My God and your God.” 
John 20:15-17

Mary Magdalene. She was the first to bring the good news at a time in history where the testimony of women wasn't even valid in court.

Who did Jesus make the first witness to his resurrection?

"They said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” 
John 8:4-7

A woman accused of adultery. He clapped back on the men who wished to stone her.

Who did Jesus defend when the Pharisees tried to trap him?

"The woman said to him, "I know that Messiah is coming" (who is called Christ). "When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us." Jesus said to her, "I am he, the one who is speaking to you." John 4:25-26

The Samaritan woman at the well. Significant because she was a social outcast.

Who is the first person Jesus openly reveals himself as the Messiah to?

Through examining his teachings and actions we can discern that Jesus treated women as equals to men. As a religious teacher, Jesus flew against the cultural norms of his time by speaking, touching, healing, teaching, and relying on women. Jesus believes in gender equality because he created us all to be his image bearers.  
"There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus."
