    Film Review: Lucy

Luc Besson, writer and producer of “The Fifth Element” and the “Taken” trilogy, maintains his ability to captivate an audience with “Lucy” which grossed over forty three million dollars its opening weekend. The film undeniably keeps audience members engaged with its unpredictable plot line and impressive special effects. Although clearly a work of fiction, the movie explores very real concerns and thoughts in addition to theories on creation and evolution. Some may argue that the movie aims to disprove God. Personally, I found the movie to demonstrate that one cannot disprove the existence of a higher being. The movie opens with Scarlett Johansson as Lucy speaking, “Life was given to us a billion years ago. What have we done with it?” Lucy finds herself in a completely unexpected and terrifying situation that rapidly escalates to a life-changing experience for her and for humankind. Viewers better be prepared for a quick, action-packed ride from beginning to end. Johansson’s intoxicating voice and beauty make her an easy heroine to root for. The role of Lucy is very challenging but she did a beautiful job showing the complexity of the emotions the character experiences sequentially throughout her short but incredibly unique and challenging journey. If you want to be challenged intellectually and leave the theater hungry for conversation and debate, Lucy is an excellent choice.
