On top of being a travel blogger I also work for the news, which means that each time someone does something incredibly stupid in another country, I'm bound to hear about it. When there's a lacking of research into local customs coupled with lowered inhibitions sometimes people do stupid things. The following list is ten perfect examples of just that.

Example no.1: Tourists kill endangered dolphin for the "perfect selfie."

On a beach in Argentina a man spots two miniature La Plata Dolphins swimming close to the shore. Man proceeds to pluck dolphin from the water and hold it up triumphantly in front of hoards of other tourists. Hoards swarm over and want selfies. Dolphin grows increasingly terrified and distressed as it's passed from tourist to tourist. More tourists gather. Dolphin dies from stress. Tourists kill dolphin for the perfect selfie.

Example no. 2: Tourists pose naked on sacred mountaintop.

A bunch of young tourists climb to the sacred mountaintop Kinabalu in Malaysian Borneo. Tourists decide to pose naked for photos. Earthquake then kills 16 people. Malaysia says tourists are to blame for angering the mountain spirits. Tribal members demand that tourists face jail time. Tourists are fined over $1,000 USD.

Example no. 3: Guy steals political banner in North Korea.

Whilst on a trip in North Korea, a man steals a political banner from the hotel he's staying at. North Korea is one of the strictest and most oppressed regimes in the world and do not see humour in it. North Korea won't chill. Man is sentenced to 15 years of hard labour. Man cries. A lot.

Example no. 4: American foreign exchange student gets stuck in "giant vagina."

In Germany, and American foreign exchange student is thrilled to find a stone statue that looks like a giant vagina. Student decides to enter said vagina and pose for pictures being 'birthed.' Student gets stuck. Firefighters are then forced to step in to rescue student. Student's friends photograph the entire ordeal and upload it to the internet.

Example no. 5: Welsh tourists break into Sea World and steal Fairy Penguin.

Two Welsh tourists get ridiculously drunk on Vodka whilst staying on the Australian Gold Coast. Tourists decide to break into Sea World to swim with the dolphins. Tourists end their night stealing a Fairy Penguin and housing it in their hotel bathroom. Tourists wake the next morning hung over and completely clueless as to how penguin got into their bathroom. Tourists then try to release penguin in the waterway and get caught. Tourists get fined for trespassing and theft.

Example no. 6: Tourists steal earlobe from 1000 year old statue.

On Easter Island a Finnish tourist decides to steal part of an earlobe from 1000 year old statue. Chile is not impressed. Tourist is fined $17,000 USD and banned from entering Chile for three years.

Example no. 7: French tourists pose naked at sacred Angkor Wat temples.

Following the trend to pose naked at sacred sites, three French men travel to Cambodia and decide to have naked parade at the Angkor Wat temples. Cambodia fines and deports men. Cambodia sends message to future tourists by banning them from showing shoulders or knees at sacred sites.

Example no. 8: Tourists shove Bison calf into the back of their wagon because it looked cold.

In Yellowstone National Park a group of tourists come across a Bison calf. Deciding that the calf looks cold, tourists then kidnap it from its mother and shove it into the back of their station wagon to drive it to a nearby ranger station. Ranger is furious. Ranger tries to take calf back to its mother, but it's now too late. Mother has rejected calf, and calf has to be put down. Tourists essentially kill calf.

Example no. 9: Woman carves drawings into rocks in US National Parks.

Woman gains huge Instagram following by posting pictures of drawings she carves into rocks at National Parks across the US. National Parks outraged. National Parks fine woman, sentence her to community service and ban her from all National Parks in the country. Woman's Instagram account is pulled down.

Example no. 10: Tourist climbs 126 year old statue for the "perfect selfie."

In Portugal, a man decides to climb a 126 year old statue of a young king for the "perfect selfie." Instead man knocks 126 year old statue to the ground, smashing it. Man tries to run and has to be chased down by police. Man gets fined.

There you have it; ten cases of spectacular idiocy by tourists in other countries. The moral of the story: Use common sense and do your research into cultural customs wherever you travel, even if you think you know them already. What's the dumbest behaviour you've ever heard of?
