It has often been said that 'my generation' (I'm 20, almost 21 years old) is addicted.
To our phones
Our iPad
Any social media
Texting
Technology
And I'm not here to argue that per say, but I am here to give you my view.
If I speak on behalf of my entire generation, and somebody in this generation doesn't agree, I apologize. I'm doing what I can.
We have a serious case of FOMO. [Fear of missing out]
We want to be in communication.
We want to be ready for anything.
We don't want to miss a single thing.
Life is moving fast, and sometimes, in our minds, we'd rather take a picture of a moment that we can look back on and share with others, than experience the moment.
While we have the memory, memories fade.
We like having something tangible to remind us of ourselves of our experiences.
We also love that if we do go on an adventure, we can just tweet about it and more times than not, friends will see it and want to join.
People say all the time that Facebook is taking away 'real friendships.'
I am here to tell you that, that thanks to Facebook, I have kept some of my friendships intact.
I went to a boarding school for high school. A school 998 miles away from my hometown. I am now in college, 2132 miles from my high school, and 1469 miles away from my hometown.
Thanks to Facebook, and Instagram, and twitter, I have been able to keep up with my friends from all over.
Without those social media platforms I probably would have lost contact with some people I today call my best friends.
Now, I'm not saying we're all like that.
I know lots of people who will take down a picture because it didn't receive enough 'likes.'
I know lots of people who constantly request "more followers"
Some of us do gain confidence but little things like that.
There's something nice about posting a tweet you think is funny, and having people retweet it.
But it shouldn't be the end of the world if that doesn't happen.
So, how can we fix this? Is there even a problem to fix? What is the meaning of life?
You may now go back to procrastinating,
Thank you,
And goodbye
