Response to A "True Detective" Reading List:
To this list I’ll add the name Karl Edward Wagner. He’s not necessarily someone Nic Pizzolatto was influenced by, but his horror fiction (in particular his much reprinted short story “Sticks”) nicely dovetails with the books listed here. ‘The King in Yellow’ by Robert W. Chambers was a big influence on the series. Wagner was there over thirty years before. He even named the small publishing outfit he started (with David Drake and one other friend) Carcosa, after a mythical city talked about in the book. The books to look for by Wagner are ‘In A Lonely Place’, ‘Why Not You and I?’ and ‘Exorcisms and Ecstasies.’ Expect to pay collector’s prices.
