10 Songs Perhaps Just As "Rapey" As "Blurred Lines"

Yes, it's undeniable that "Blurred Lines" has offensive and widely triggering lyrics. But it's not the only song of its kind on the radio — let's take the focus off Mr. Thicke for a moment and glance at a few other hits we still love.

1. Enrique Iglesias, "Tonight (I'm F*cking You)"

"I know you want it" - that Blurred Lines hook that has us all fired up. How does Tonight begin, again?

I know you want me
I made it obvious that I want you too
So put it on me
Let's remove the space between me and you

And then of course the chorus:

Please excuse me, I don't mean to be rude,
But tonight I'm f*cking you.

2. French Montana ft. Drake, Lil Wayne, & Rick Ross, "Pop That"

Ross:

3. Trey Songz ft. Fabolous, "Say Aah"

This one's a bit more subtle, as it's partly a metaphor, but still features that "I know you..." assumption that crosses the line of consent.

4. The Starting Line, "Bedroom Talk"

Not a radio hit, but shows that questionable lyrics aren't limited to hip hop.

Or maybe for just mine
So get your ass up cause you're in no hurry
like I am now
I'm getting older and older all of the time
or maybe for just tonight

Again, more subtle, and could be argued to be a monogamous message if not for the "maybe for just tonight". The intention of exploitation is there.

5. Maroon 5 ft. Christina Aguilera, "Moves Like Jagger"

I don't need to try to control you
Look into my eyes and I'll own you

I admit this is a less than perfect example since Christina Aguilera does give consent (You wanna know how to make me smile/ Take control, own me just for the night). However, doesn't that just encourage a controlling, "don't take no for an answer" approach to sex?

6. New Boyz ft. The Cataracs & Dev, "Backseat"

Oh you a good girl, it's cool I play pretend too
I heard you had a baby, you want a New Boy in you?

Well would you look at that! Another exact duplicate of the "Blurred Lines" lyrics under attack.

And also:

Don't say a word just turn around and let me see
Girl you got some'n special, some'n special for me?

7. The Cab, "La La"

Another less popular one, but clearly crosses some important lines.

I just wanna get you sideways
No, I’m not the type to lie
But I might just start tonight
Let me turn off all these lights

Oh, and:

I love this band and the strings are beautiful, but "I'll say and do anything to get you in bed with no intentions of commitment" isn't the most romantic message.

8. Big Sean, "Dance (A$$)"

Can't help but laugh every time I hear this song... but yeah, it's bad. I'm not going to quote it because it's more of a "look at the big picture" type of example. It doesn't take more than one listen to see what I mean.

9. Eminem ft. Rihanna, "Love The Way You Lie"

As you hopefully already realize - terrible in an even scarier way because she responds to abuse with But that's alright because I love the way you lie. It's a beautiful song, but definitely makes the list if we're talking about triggering words and less than ideal motivations.

10. Usher ft. Young Jeezy, "Love in This Club"

Looking in your eyes,

Are some of these an overreaction and a bit of a stretch? Possibly.

Has the hype about "Blurred Lines" and its offensive lyrics been blown out of perspective? ...Also possible. But that's for you to decide.
