16 Of The New Yorkiest New York Things

Concrete jungle where dreams are made of.

    1. The Subway

What's more New York than an underground system of trains that somehow never collide and transport thousands of New Yorkers on the daily?! EVERY DAY IS A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE.

    2. Leaky Buildings

(Not applicable in the winter months.) During the summer, avoid walking alongside buildings unless you want air conditioner drips to land on your coifed locks.

    3. Umbrellas*

*Can be used as a defense mechanism for rain, other umbrellas and human interaction in general.

    4. Granny Carts

Alright. I love me a good granny cart. For those of you who are unfamiliar with a granny cart, imagine a grocery cart mixed with a stroller, and you've probably got the right idea. Great for getting all your sh*t from Point A to Point B ... bad for maneuvering, well, anywhere.

    5. Garbage

Not just litter, but literal garbage. In bags. In piles. On the sidewalks. All the time.

    6. Jaywalking

Waiting for the light to change is a waste of time, and New Yorkers have no time to waste.

    7. Taxis

    This one is obvious, right?

    8. 24/7

Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Instant gratification is at an all-time high in this city. Millenials everywhere, rejoice.

    9. Bodegas

Part convenience store, part deli, part bank.

    10. Drop-off Laundromats

You can literally drop your laundry off in the morning and pick it up freshly pressed and folded right after work. There is a God. And He is good.

    11. Walking

Typically the fastest form of transportation. You'll hit your FitBit goal every single day.

    12. Pigeons

Being pooped on by a New York City pigeon is basically a right of passage.

    13. Famous People

A-List, B-List, XYZ-List celebs? They are normal people here. It's weird.

    14. Street Artists

Steel drummers! Comedy troupes! Spray paint portraitists! They make the Times Square subway station semi-bearable.

    15. Curbed Dogs

For the most part, bringing your pup into any NYC store is generally frowned upon which is why you can almost always find a small dog tied to a bench, patiently waiting for his owner to return.

    16. Green Standing Water

When it rains, it pours. And when it pours on the streets of New York there's (literally) nowhere for the water to go. Underground subways = very little street drainage. Very little street drainage = standing water that mixes in perfect proportion with taxi exhaust fumes, litter and grime to turn that once-fresh water a beautiful shade of green. Yummy.
