8 CEOs Who Are Winning At Social Media

Guess who's been tweeting from the company account?

While most companies are clamoring to blast their brand's message across social media, CEOs have been a little slow to jump on the bandwagon. A recent study by Domo found that 68% of Fortune 500 CEOs have no social media presence—not even a LinkedIn profile.

In all honesty, we'd probably rather hear more from CEOs than from marketing and PR teams. CEOs provide a more personal point of view, and can be held to greater accountability for their corporate decisions when they're only a tweet away.

Here are eight top CEOs who are getting it right with social media.

    1. Warren Buffett, Berkshire-Hathaway

Warren Buffett (@WarrenBuffett), one of the most successful investors of the 20th century, is also one of the most successful CEOs on Twitter. Despite only having five total tweets, Buffett has 844,731 followers—almost 100,000 more than Ralph Lauren who tweets an average of three times a day.

    2. Hikmet Ersek, Western Union

Hikmet Ersek, CEO of Western Union, takes a spot on this list for having the fastest-growing following on Twitter among F500 CEOs. In the past year alone, Ersek’s followers (@WesternUnionCEO) have grown by 4,529% as he’s highlighted Western Union’s philanthropic efforts.

    3. Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook

It may be no surprise that Facebook’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg, takes the cake for most successful Facebook following. His Facebook fan page has over 29 million followers. Zuckerberg is also the only Fortune 500 CEO on all 5 major social media networks (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, and Instagram).

    4. Meg Whitman, Hewlett-Packard

LinkedIn is one of the most popular networks among Fortune 500 CEOs, and is a natural fit for corporate professionals. Meg Whitman, Hewlett-Packard’s CEO, stands out for having over 690,000 followers on her LinkedIn profile. In addition, her Facebook fan page has 210,382 followers.

    5. Larry Page, Google

While Google+ seems to be at the butt of most jokes these days, Google co-founder Larry Page is taking full advantage of his company’s social media network. His Google+ page has over 8,361,461 followers.

    6. Jack Salzwedel, American Family

    7. Michael Rapino, Live Nation

While most young people are abandoning Facebook in favor of Instagram, older generations (and most CEOs) have been slow to catch on. Michael Rapino, though, is using Instagram (@rapino99) to its full advantage to promote LiveNation, even gramming a picture of himself at one of the company’s events.

    8. Keith Rupert Murdoch, News Corp

Keith Rupert Murdoch has the strongest social clout of all Fortune 500 CEOs. Murdoch’s Twitter account (@rupertmurdoch) has a Klout Score of 91. Klout scores measure the breadth and strength of online social influence.
